It’s time for more puppetry, music & mayhem at the Puppet Place Experimental Cabaret! We invite you to Puppet Place HQ for this very special event. Expect puppets of all shapes and sizes, plus weird and wonderful happenings!
Come join us at Puppet Place This time round the Puppet Place cabaret is taking on a slightly different guise, as it is part of the Bristol Experimental Puppet Festival – https://bristolexperimentalpuppetfestival.com.

It will follow a similar format with eight or nine puppet based cabaret style performances of all shapes and sizes, along with weird and wonderful happenings and walkabouts. With the focus very much on experimental puppetry!
This show is suitable for ages 16+, but please note parental discretion is still advised as there maybe swearing and some puppet nudity!

Meet Puppet Place Cabaret’s incomparable compere and host with the most…heads: Chatsworth and Lyle AKA Iguana B. Goode AKA The Rock Harmonica Lizard!
Chatsworth is high-vibes rock and roll, whilst Lyle, ‘on the other hand’, is hi-vis health and safety. Lyle monitors the sound levels whilst Chatsworth climbs the monitors like the monitor-lizard king he is. Together they guarantee a puppet party as hot as hell at a safe and sensible number of decibels.
Note: Chatsworth and Lyle’s tech team, @johnswalepoetry and @spike_zephaniah from @themotherwolfclub , request audiences bear with their clients’ stage lamps being set to unusually warm. As they explain: “The boys don’t just bask in the spotlight because they’re divas — it’s essential for thermoregulation.”

‘AnOtherness’
long post incoming - but this has been a big one!
Here’s the first wee peek at my works recently commissioned by the most incredible @tyntesfieldnt @nationaltrust as part of their ‘Reviving Gothic’ exhibition; showcasing leading Contemporary Gothic artists.
This is Atlas, a brittle little beauty, their head made of an actual Atlas vertebrae found many moons in some tough times.
Interestingly the etymology of the word Atlas means ‘to endure’ which I think captures their essence perfectly. I did very little to accentuate their emotive little expression, it came naturally with the rawness and weathering… such is endurance!
I wanted to create a creature that was emotively Uncanny; equal measures soft and strange, tender and tormented, Other yet entirely resonate - inviting visitors to feel a sense of care and kinship with something totally unknown that initially perhaps made them a little uncertain, or even uncomfortable. If more folk could approach ‘the Other’ with softness and solidarity, beyond fear and resistance, and acknowledge that it is exactly our all being different that we all have in common, we can begin to break down binary thinking of ‘Us and Them’ and celebrate the richness of diversity instead of succumbing to separation and segregation.

As part of Bristol Experimental Puppet Festival, Undergrowth is proud to announce a workshop in collaboration with international puppet maker Anne Murray of Refuge Puppets!
Anne Murray is an Irish and American artist, who is focused on using puppets for social justice and advocacy for the oppressed and traumatised. Her project, Refuge Puppets, uses puppets to create a safe space together, helping with healing from trauma and displacement. This workshop will enable you to carve and createpuppet heads and hands from re-harvested styrofoam and cardboard, as well as construct glove puppet bodies from recycled clothing. Bring some article of clothing to recycle and an idea of the character you would like to create. Let’s create something fun and useful, together.
Friday 12 June: Puppets in Prague Marionette workshop
Join Johana Trejtnar, an instructor at @puppetsinprague who is hosting a 1.5-hour workshop on Czech marionettes in the Fabrication Workshop at Puppet Place on Friday 12 June from 11:30-13:00.
The workshop will cover the basics of:

Designing your marionette
Carving a head
Marionette-manipulation

Sunday 7 June: Protect the Dolls: Queer Embodiment Through Doll-Making Workshop
Join Fibi in a relaxed and reflective session, exploring how we can use dollmaking to express our inner selves, and access complex notions of gender and queerness.
Participants will be equipped with materials, needle and thread and embellishments. We will be following a simple pattern, but expect to bring your own flair to your creation. All levels welcome!
The outcomes of this session will be recorded (with your consent!) and incorporated into a zine about queer embodiment and expression, to raise money for trans healthcare funds.
Tickets are FREE. Donations are optional, and will go towards covering material costs and transport.
