‘AnOtherness’
long post incoming - but this has been a big one!
Here’s the first wee peek at my works recently commissioned by the most incredible @tyntesfieldnt @nationaltrust as part of their ‘Reviving Gothic’ exhibition; showcasing leading Contemporary Gothic artists.
This is Atlas, a brittle little beauty, their head made of an actual Atlas vertebrae found many moons in some tough times.
Interestingly the etymology of the word Atlas means ‘to endure’ which I think captures their essence perfectly. I did very little to accentuate their emotive little expression, it came naturally with the rawness and weathering… such is endurance!
I wanted to create a creature that was emotively Uncanny; equal measures soft and strange, tender and tormented, Other yet entirely resonate - inviting visitors to feel a sense of care and kinship with something totally unknown that initially perhaps made them a little uncertain, or even uncomfortable. If more folk could approach ‘the Other’ with softness and solidarity, beyond fear and resistance, and acknowledge that it is exactly our all being different that we all have in common, we can begin to break down binary thinking of ‘Us and Them’ and celebrate the richness of diversity instead of succumbing to separation and segregation.
More shots coming soon with a closer look at their full form in all its marionette magick, focusing on materials and mechs, and the metalwork sculpture they’re encased in.

Another day in the life. Here we are teaching Chief Executive of the Arts Council, the lovely Darren Henley, how to Blacksmith!
On Fridays our doors were open for young creatives to explore our workshops and discuss creative careers with our team.
Some tried out our new forge, just like Darren, under the guidance of Harry our Blacksmith, who is the newest addition to our team.

Children are cared for in the adjacent room so you are never far away and you can hear how much fun they are having! Whilst you get some space in a relaxed and supportive, community environment.
