Elephants in the Fog has scripted history at the Cannes Film Festival 2026 by becoming the first Nepali film ever to win the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize.
Directed by Abinash Bikram Shah in his feature debut, the thriller follows Pirati, the matriarch of a Kinnar community in Nepal’s Terai region, whose life changes after her daughter mysteriously disappears.
The film explores identity, love, duty, and the struggles of Nepal’s transgender community with a deeply human lens.
Shah is already a celebrated name in Nepali cinema after his short film Lori earned a Special Mention at Cannes in 2022, making him the first Nepali filmmaker to win recognition there.
He has also written acclaimed films like Kalo Pothi: The Black Hen and Shambhala.
