Thank you to all the wonderful folks who came to the opening of hyperfiXation last night. 🤩 We’re still buzzing from all the love! Jay Cabalu’s expansive solo show will be up at the SUM until May 29. 🛰️

If you couldn’t make it out yesterday, all is not lost. On May 16 Jay will be at the gallery to give an Artist Talk about his work as a response to capitalism, consumption, mass media, and pleasure — it may get a little meta…

And if you’d love to learn more about his practice, Jay will be running a hand-cut collaging workshop on the 23rd! Peep our Linktree for more! 💽

hyperfiXation opens tomorrow! Join us at SUM gallery for a free Opening Reception on Thursday, May 7 from 5–9pm.

In hyperfiXation, artist Jay Cabalu excavates his obsession with consumption and the exploitation of beauty in manufactured magazine images. Through a selection of hand-cut collages that employ scopophilia (taking pleasure in looking), he demonstrates how capitalism fabricates consent and compliance to material culture.

hyperfiXation runs until May 29 and is part of a suite of events at SUM gallery that celebrate Asian Heritage Month. This exhibition has been generously supported by The Parachute Fund.

Please note: To accommodate members of our community, from 5 – 6pm the Opening Reception will be masks mandatory, and from 6pm to closing the reception will be masks recommended. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided at the reception desk.

Free registration for the opening reception can be found on our LinkTree, linked in our bio.

May 5th is Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People. We honour and recognize the far-too many loved ones lost.

Today we bring attention to the ongoing violence faced by MMIWG2S, and call for meaningful change. Here are some actions you can take in solidarity:
🔺 wear red
🔺 hang a red dress outside
🔺 post, like, and share on social media
🔺 attend in-person rallies and events
🔺 read the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls

NEW (old) STAFF ALERT!! !
We are so excited to welcome Carmen Levy-Milne to QAF+SUM, as our Operations Coordinator for the 2026 festival season! Previously, Carmen worked with us during the 2024 festival, and we are so lucky to to have her back in the office.
--
Carmen Levy-Milne (she/her) is a curator and arts administrator born and raised on the unceded land of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm people. As a diasporic Jewish settler, her practice is primarily concerned with the philosophy of tikkun olam (“the repair of the world”), where she sees her work in the arts sphere as responsible for uplifting reparative, decolonial, and critical artistic responses to broader social, political, and cultural circumstances.

Uh oh. Our social media gay goofed!!! Sorry everyone!!! Happy belated Lesbian Visibility Week!
--
From fighting for our rights through early organizations like the Daughters of Bilitis, to the Blood Sisters’ caretaking and activism through the AIDS crisis, our lesbians siblings have always been an integral force in our rainbow community. QAF+SUM honors their legacies and says thank you for the work they’ve done and continue to do.

That’s (almost) a wrap!! Friday, April 24th is the last opportunity to see Kinship, our group ceramics exhibition at SUM gallery.

We want to extend a HUGE thank you to all of the artists and supporters who made this exhibition possible. It was immediately apparent how strongly the themes of transformation and contradiction woven throughout these gorgeous works resonated with the community, and we are so grateful to everyone who took the time to come visit.

Looking forward, our next exhibition hyperfiXation, opens on May 7th.

QAF+SUM is thrilled to be partnering with the DOXA Documentary Film Festival this year to highlight Shelly’s Leg, a short film directed by Wes Hurley and narrated by Oscar-nominee, Kathleen Turner. Presented as part of DOXA’s Shorts Program 2, ‘In earth and sky’, Shelly’s Leg screens on May 1st, beginning at 6pm at The Cinemateque, with a Q&A to follow.

Shelly’s Leg tells the true story of an eccentric young stripper named Shelly Baumann who, in 1970, lost her leg in a freak parade canon accident, then used her settlement money to open 'Shelly's Leg' disco–one of the nation's first and most consequential openly gay spaces.

For tickets and full programming for the 2026 festival, visit doxa2026.eventive.org

The time has come to announce the departure of our dear General Manager, Tabitha McIntyre. After three seasons helping to steer QAF+SUM, Tabitha has decided that it is time to return home to Scotland. Though we are sad to see them leave, we’re parting on good terms and can’t wait to see what they tackle next. And while endings can be sad, there’s a silver lining! Stepping into the GM role will be our incredibly capable Operations Coordinator, Rio Picollo.

Join us in wishing both Tabitha and Rio the best as they navigate this period of transition.

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
