One aspect we were always fighting was the green spill onto the reflective uniforms. We tried to have the cast as far away from the green screen as possibly, and backlight tungsten. Ben (Director, and Post VFX) had a great keying process that eliminated any green spill that we were not able to take care of on set.

One interesting challenge was to frame for the full gate for any singles to maximize our resolution and image fidelity, and to frame for 2.35 for anything that needed to fit within our final output frames such as group shots, OTS and anything where props could not be digitally extended.

For Dex's Bedroom, I had Igor prep the lighting as we were finishing up another scene. 2 x Skypanel s60s outside the far camera right window. Dana dolly for a camera push in.
For the skateboard shot we tried to rig the skateboard to the dolly, but we ended up just having Dex stand on the doorway dolly with the camera as we tracked backwards. Alastair rigged a 4x4 Frame overhead to soften the fluorescent lights.

In late 2019 I was the cinematographer for a tween sci-fi teaser trailer for Little Engine Moving Pictures. This was my first larger studio job as the DP.
A big challenge was trying to design the lighting without knowing what the background plates would looked like beforehand, and balancing the levels to make the world feel real. Sometimes you have to put a lot of faith into the VFX plates and not complicate things and overlight.
One thing we did was have a roaming green wall to hide a skypanel s60 to backlight the characters everytime we had a chance. By having it on a stand instead of on the grid, it allowed us to change the height to optimize the angle for each shot.

In late 2019 I was the cinematographer for a tween sci-fi teaser trailer for Little Engine Moving Pictures. This was my first larger studio job as the DP.
A big challenge was trying to design the lighting without knowing what the background plates would looked like beforehand, and balancing the levels to make the world feel real. Sometimes you have to put a lot of faith into the VFX plates and not complicate things and overlight.
One thing we did was have a roaming green wall to hide a skypanel s60 to backlight the characters everytime we had a chance. By having it on a stand instead of on the grid, it allowed us to change the height to optimize the angle for each shot.

With the extreme limitation of gear and crew, I tried to use as much natural light as possible while using what little rags and fabrics I had to shape the light.
On this project I really tried to flex my blocking skills, as that was one of the few things I could do to try and make our high page count days.
Being limited by how much we could see on our wide angles, I tried to include a few roaming tight angle shots to tell more of the story silently. A lot of flashlight play, even wrapping myself in bleached muslin to raise our levels for the leading shots.
Charles had a lot of creative shot ideas he wanted to accomplish on this film. The interesting thing about being restricted by the budget is that some shots are just not possible, so you have to find creative ways to translate those same ideas into shots. Usually the solution was reblocking the action to fit our frames. Another problem that arose was having the scene feel too staged. In those cases we either had to forgo having people lit a certain way to keep the authenticity or we had to change the actions and script slightly.

Being limited by how much we could see on our wide angles, I tried to include a few roaming tight angle shots to tell more of the story silently. A lot of flashlight play, even wrapping myself in bleached muslin to raise our levels for the leading shots.
Charles had a lot of creative shot ideas he wanted to accomplish on this film. The interesting thing about being restricted by the budget is that some shots are just not possible, so you have to find creative ways to translate those same ideas into shots. Usually the solution was reblocking the action to fit our frames. Another problem that arose was having the scene feel too staged. In those cases we either had to forgo having people lit a certain way to keep the authenticity or we had to change the actions and script slightly.
I am very proud to have worked with the cast and crew and of all our creative solutions we came up with.

In early 2019 I started working on the short film "For Christ Sake" with @simonjmcnally
This would be my first short film as the cinematographer where I would have time with the director to develop all the looks and motifs we would use throughout the film in preproduction.
I had a lot of ideas about what the creative development process would be like, and this wasn't it. Instead of planning out every shot meticulously with every aspect having some sort of deeper meaning, Simon and I created a set of rules for ourselves and used those to guide our decision making on set. Being a low budget film we already had a lot of constraints to work around, we needed to create a language where we would utilize our constraints and turn that into our look for the film.
