Most audio meters show individual measurements—a signal at -12dB, a frequency at 440Hz. But in music context is everything, so I wanted a way to show the relationship between things.
I call it Standing Wave Calculator. It simulates standing wave interference patterns based on Chladni figures—the geometric shapes that form when sand settles on a vibrating plate. Input any numbers, and it generates overlapping wave patterns based on their ratio. Simple ratios like 1:1 or 3:2 create simple shapes, while complex ratios like 15:8 or 19:20 produce intricate, chaotic patterns.
You can use it to visualize the degree of dissonance between pitches, the complexity of modulation ratios in an FM synth, or really anything else that uses numbers..

A wave terrain synthesizer that generates complex waveforms using a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional surface, where pixel brightness represents elevation.
Since it converts image data into audio data and reads it back at audio rate, wav_Map essentially creates sound directly from images. You can even drag your own files in and make waveforms out of whatever pictures you want.

Sharing a patch today for Max 9 - commissioned by Cycling 74.

It’s a MIDI sequencer built around two components:

SPIN/SHAPE 🌀↻ - where a rotating polygon triggers notes when its corners pass sequence steps, and NOTE/WINDOW ♪🪟 - a 16-step sequence with a movable window that selects which pitches to play. Record notes, move the window to select different subsets, and let the rotating polygon create unexpected patterns through its geometric playback.

plays a single grain when a pulse is received, the pulses in this case are derived from 2 distorted ramp signals, so the shape of the wave sorta bends time, which affects the space between triggers. the length of the grain affects the rhythm too, because it wants to finish playing one grain before it moves on to the next. It all ended up being really fluid and reactive in a very satisfying way.

I stayed up too late making this.

Test driving my Suzuki Waraku, also known as an Electric Taishogoto,Nagoya Harp, or most mysteriously, the Peacock Koto. It’s a very weird synthesizer that only makes traditional Japanese instrument sounds.

i’ve been doing this a lot this week. I basically just recreated something i do on my modular synthesizer, but in Max, presumably so I never have to leave my room…
You have 3 very simple oscillators (no envelopes, no filters, no way to turn them off) that can be controlled both manually and with the 3 LFOs at the top of the screen, then everything is quantized into a scale. You have a lot of control over the pitches, it definitely feels like an instrument, but an instrument that you can’t really control all the way.
It’s fun to play, and I think it sounds great, but the real innovation here is making liberal use of wingdings in the GUI.

Since wav_Map converts image data into audio data behind the scenes and then reads that data back at audio rate as a waveform, it is just as logical to do away with the whole “wave terrain” construct and say that the oscillator creates sound from images, because the sound it produces is literally made from the image itself. I’ll let you decide how you want to think about it.
