Ever wondered how to eat a sea urchin?

Despite their formidable spiky exterior, the delicacy inside, known as uni, is a culinary treasure. Each urchin is shucked to order, ensuring premium freshness—often, the spines still move on the plate as a testament to its just-harvested quality.

Uni is celebrated for its creamy texture, briny flavor, and subtle sweetness.

Santa Barbara is world-renowned for its uni, and we present it crudo style over a raw sea scallop and lime wheel with a house-made ponzu for drizzling. The lime wheel adds a refreshing citrus note and serves as a perfect vessel—just remember, it’s not meant to be eaten 🙃

🦀 This was overwhelming from start to finish, but in a good way!

We tried #spidercrab for the first time at @sbshellfishco. We originally came for sea urchin, but they were out. At $17.95, the local spider crabs they had here ranged from 4 to 8 lbs. We ended up getting a 7 lb crab, which was plenty for our party of 4. The main difference is the shells are way tougher to crack, the meat not as sweet but plentiful, and if you ask them to keep the insides intact, you'll have tomalley for days. While we enjoyed it, we still love king crab and dungeness crab more.

Everything else we ate on our visit was also great!
