This amazing #scarabbeetle inspired piece by @tallulah_bowden.design deserved a #lightingbreakdown.

Key was an odd combination of small hard spot in a spill kill dish - for that direct sun vibe - and a large silver parabolic brolly directly behind the spot for a really directional specular fill light.

The parabolic was gelled with some cosmetic peach diffusion gel to warm the skin highlights.

The keys were flagged off the background camera left to add some dimensionality.

Next was the accent light - a large gridded octa overhead and behind. In the final shots it was actually further back - I didn’t want it hitting the model’s nose.

Lastly was a floor skip or kicker - a green gelled dish bouncing off a silver reflector to bring out the green of the outfit as well as provide a little hint of unnatural uplight to make it look slightly otherworldly.

Modelled seemingly effortlessly by @darcie_louise_model with ninja HMUA artist @gemmahowellbeauty on brushes.

Normally when I'm lighting @tabithaboydell 's events I aim to create natural looking, soft, directional painterly light.

At the recent 'Kitsch Couture' event at @oldwaitingroom.peckhamrye I got a little more adventurous. And before the other photographers arrived I grabbed @saich0tic @sin_model_ and @sydney.silverr for a few frames.

Lighting: Large gridded Octa, red gelled fill bounced off a silver reflector, smidge of ambient and some funky white balance manipulation.

Styled by Tabitha, of course.
