Small Press Traffic
We are a Bay Area seedbed for poets who push boundaries in the arts. The Back Room✺ is our multidisciplinary online publishing project.

Excited to announce that Small Press Traffic has received a Further Triennial Community Impact Fund Grant ✨
The grant supports Further & Back, our 2027 exhibition at Et al. Gallery showcasing materials from the SPT Archives alongside newly commissioned works. The show considers how Northern California built literary countercultures through convergent practices of publishing and performance.
We’re honored to platform poets and writers in the inaugural Further Triennial, “Around Here,” which brings together over 100 Bay Area organizations to celebrate the region’s artistic cultures.
Open call for commissioned artists coming this summer. Sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop!

On Wednesday June 3, Small Press Traffic and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts present an evening of poetic texts in dialogue with the dream-like video installation “The Prince of Homburg” by P. Staff.
Four Bay Area writers—Marcel Pardo Ariza, Snowflake Arizmendi-Calvert, Mara Hassan, and willow wilderness hour—will respond to the exhibition through newly commissioned texts which move between reflection, resistance, and reimagination.
The program celebrates the launch of Small Press Traffic’s “The Back Room” summer folio, OMENS, featuring all four writers.
Both the reading and gallery admission are free, as part of Free Wednesdays at YBCA. Guests are invited to view the video installation before or after the program.
RSVP via the Free Wednesdays link in our bio.

Sunday, May 17 | @etalgallerysf
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM PST
Small Press Traffic is pleased to present a special film screening and conversation with Vincent Katz, Oliver Katz, Steve Dickison, Norma Cole, and Michael Palmer.
Golden Gate: An Oral History of Bay Area Poetics (2026, directed by Oliver Katz & Vincent Katz) is an hour-long documentary chronicling the San Francisco Bay Area poetry scene in the second half of the twentieth century, featuring new interviews with Bill Berkson, Andrei Codrescu, Norma Cole, Diane di Prima, Steve Dickison, Kevin Killian, Joanne Kyger, David Levi Strauss, Michael McClure, Duncan McNaughton, David Meltzer, Michael Palmer, Aram Saroyan, and Anne Waldman.
The film features original footage of Michael McClure reading his poem “From the Tower” and of Diane di Prima reading her poem “In a Dream of Another Life I Visit Tassajara” as well as nearly one hundred archival photos, videos and sound recordings, sourced from the poets’ personal collections and from university archives. Father and son Vincent and Oliver Katz made this film over eleven years, filming each of these poets in their homes, from San Francisco to Bolinas to New York City to Los Angeles. Each poet’s living and working space illuminates a life dedicated to poetry, to, in the words of New York School poet Frank O’Hara, “making your own days.”

Small Press Traffic presents a spring reading with Terrence Arjoon, Sophia Dahlin, and Ronaldo V. Wilson. Join us for an evening of crossings between lyric and performance, body and text, dream and dispossession. These three poets bend tradition toward stranger, unruly forms, where wit, excess, and pressure on the line open new possibilities of address.
Ebti, Jacob Kahn, and Kristen Nelson will offer introductions for the readers.
🎨 Matt Borruso, Arrangement #31 (detail) from the exhibition Pictures on view at Et al., 3/6–4/18, 2026

A glimpse of last night’s virtuosic performances from poets Tyehimba Jess (@tyehimbajess) and Tongo Eisen-Martin (@_tongogara_). Thank you to everyone who gathered together for this powerful evening of imagining, as curator Tonya Foster (@fosterpoet) said, “worlds that might could be.”
🍉 ✨ 📚
Looking forward to future collaborations with the SFSU Poetry Center, SFSU Creative Writing, and Black [Space] Residency @ Minnesota Street Project!

On Wednesday, April 8, 6:00pm to 8:00pm, in a collaboration between the Poetry Center and the Undisciplining the Fields series in the San Francisco State University Department of Creative Writing; Small Press Traffic; and Black [Space] Residency @ Minnesota Street Project present a special engagement with Tyehimba Jess, recipient of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in poetry, and Tongo Eisen-Martin, the 2021-2024 San Francisco Poet Laureate. Please join us for a necessary and restorative evening of poetry by poets whose works are vibrantly alive to the world as is and who invite us to imagine possible worlds that might could be — necessary worlds of otherwise and other ways.
This event is free and open to the public.
Books by both authors will be sold on a sliding scale.
6-6:30pm - Reception
6:30-8pm - Readings and Q&A
Accessibility Information:
The event will take place in the atrium of Minnesota Street Project, a single-level building with step-free entry. The sidewalk includes multiple curb cut-outs and is wheelchair accessible. While the building does not have automatic doors, staff will be stationed at the entrance at all times to provide assistance. Restrooms are accessible to individuals using mobility devices and are gender-neutral. Street parking is available, and the venue is accessible via public transportation.

Friends of Perfection photos are in! Small Press Traffic’s latest poets theatre extravaganza was a communal, interdisciplinary experiment written by 12 writers, featuring 20 collaborators and performers, and inspired by San Francisco communes like Kaliflower house (aka Friends of Perfection). Writers and artists from across Bay art scenes engaged with the ephemeral & improvisational practice of poets theater, remixing and extending elements from their own practices in high-speed collaboration.

A collection of photos and video from the marathon Dictée reading co-organized and hosted between myself and @smallpresstraffic The reading took place @bampfa on February 28th in tandem with the restrospective of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha: Multiple Offerings curated by @victoriasung and @tausifnoor
It was truly an honor to collaborate on this experience and witness Dictée take on new shape. In reading the text aloud, it felt like a series of invocations with each passing spirit who spoke into the microphone. Some sounded gravelly or loud, some with accents, some almost a whisper. Some reminded me of others who were not there.
The morning of the reading, we all woke to learn what our government did to the elementary school in Tehran. In our introductions, @maxemaxo spoke to this as we urged everyone present to speak for those who have been silenced. Like Theresa Hak Kyung Cha violently taken from the world, like those trapped in detention, like those who will never have the opportunity to name their own subjugation.
We organized this reading to honor Theresa’s process of “Multiple Telling with Multiple Offering” — multiple tellings as audience, performer, and chorus; multiple offerings in the form of a folded paper boat for those present to take home or place near the podium.
Although unplanned, the anniversary of the protests spoken of in Dictée is March 1st and widely celebrated as a day of independence in Korea. It was a chilling realization that it wasMarch 1st in Korea as the passage on Yu Gwan-sun was read aloud. Alikened to Jeanne d’Arc, she famously traveled from village to village spreading the news of the first mass protest planned against Japanese colonial rule. She succumbed to her injuries from torture at 17 years old. Many died this way.
