A Morehouse Man at the Mecca. Richard and I joked for years about whose school did it better.
Howard shaped Richard’s gift. He founded the Howard Gospel Choir as an undergrad and never stopped giving back to the place that taught him how to receive.
The Memorial Trust is building a scholarship in his name. Be on the lookout. Howard University’s honorary doctorate degree recipients for our 158th Commencement Convocation. The ceremony will transpire on the main campus of Howard University’s Upper Quadrangle at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

These honorary degree recipients reflect excellence across business, higher education, music, and leadership. The 2026’s honorees include Rosalind Brewer, interim president of Spelman College and chair emerita of the Spelman College Board of Trustees; Antoine Garibaldi, Ph.D. (B.A. ’73), president emeritus at the University of Detroit Mercy; Robert (Bob) Iger, immediate past CEO of The Walt Disney Company; and, posthumously, the Reverend Richard Smallwood (B.A. ’71, M.Div. ’04), music composer and choral director.

This year’s awardees are among the most distinguished leaders in their respective fields, each demonstrating an enduring commitment to excellence and service. As we prepare to celebrate the Class of 2026, we are honored to include these individuals whose contributions have inspired communities and shaped the world in meaningful ways.

The Reverend Richard L. Smallwood (B.A. ’71, M.Div. ’04), posthumously, will receive the honorary Doctor of Music. A founding member of the Howard Gospel Choir, Smallwood leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that has touched generations. As a singer, songwriter, and producer, he profoundly influenced Gospel music through compositions that gave voice to faith, resilience, and hope. His work, including beloved songs “Total Praise,” “The Center of My Joy,” and “I Love the Lord,” became enduring touchstones for global audiences. Howard is proud to honor one of its own whose gifts uplifted the church, the culture, and the broader human spirit.

Man, where do I even begin. Richard Smallwood (@smallrich), thank you for being the soundtrack to my childhood. Words can’t even begin to express how much your music will always mean to me. That timeless sound, your world-class singers, your genius vocals/lyrics, your jammin’ band, those masterful chords. You changed the landscape of music in so many ways, and I’m so grateful to have been able to study your work with every CD and VHS tape my family had. Every time I listen back I hear something new, and that’s truly a testament to the legend you will always be. I will hold your music close to my heart for as long as I live.
