A while back I spent time recording some truly extraordinary sounds from replicas of prehistoric and medieval musical instruments.
Bronze horns, stone flutes, bone whistles… primal sounds that have accompanied rituals and gatherings for hundreds of years.
That work became the Ancient Music Ireland Vol.1 Sound Library, and PALEOSONIC, a companion Kontakt instrument.
It still feels like a special collaboration to me so I wrote a few words about the process. (Link in Bio)
If you work with sound or simply love the rawness of ancient sounds, give it a read and a listen.

Unidentified stridulations inside a tree stump.
This recording was inspired by the adventures in soil ecoacoustics of my friend Les Goodyer - who has recorded this and other wonderful sounds before.

Introducing our new team of Sound Magazine editors! Greg, Ángel and Graham were each asked to pick a sound recording from a previous issue that inspired them in some way.
➡️ Here is Ángel @soundarkstudios presenting a recording by Les Goodyer from November 2022: Sounds from the soil. Angel says “hearing these sounds was a ground-breaking moment”.
Send us your choices! Is there a recording from a previous Sound Mag that stayed with you?
Or why not join WSRS and send us your recordings to be featured in the Sound Mag? We welcome all contributions. Good, bad, interesting, informative, travelogues, funny…

Chatting on occasion of World Gorilla Day with my daughter, and inspired by @colinhuntersound Mountain gorilla sound recording on @wildlife_sound socials, we made this. She did it all really. The words and performance are entirely hers. So proud of her.
There’s a mere 1037 mountain gorillas left in the wild, folks. Yes there’s more of the other 3 species, but they are all in decline. And yes, mountain gorilla numbers are increasing, but 1000…

Gorilla
by Isla Pérez (11)
Gorilla,
Silver backed, pure black,
Muscles working.
Gorilla,
Loving caring, always sharing,
Milk with its young.
Gorilla,
Tropical bear, finds the glare,
Of leopard lurking.
Gorilla,
Swipes and swipes, and swipes again,
Blood is washed off by the rain.
Gorilla,
Sees the glint of hunters gun,
Turns around and starts to run.
Does not make it far.
Gorilla,
Chest is rising falling, falling rising,
This is what gorilla baby saw.
Hoping dreaming, loving,
Seeing the chest rise and fall.
And never rise again.

Celebrating 🥳 receiving the Richard Margoschis Trophy from the Wildlife Sound Recording Society!
Loving the silver 🦉 and I have to say it, it’s quite special having my name next to such legends of the field 👀
The piece is a documentary-style short story, mixing wildlife with memories. It was fun to make and also useful for myself and my family.
🙏 With that i’d like thank my two eldest daughters for the inspiration and for their time. Huge thanks to @wildlife_sound for this recognition, to the judges for the comments and to former Sound Magazine editor Simon Elliot @simonsound5 for insisting on having a go at narrating.
Lastly, a special thanks to WSRS member and Audio Producer extraordinarie Diane Hope @inthesoundfield for her invaluable insight and guidance in audio storytelling. She sugested this subject.
I’ll keep saying it - if you’re into nature and sound, the Wildlife Sound Recording Society is an amazing place to be. It costs close to nothing to join and there is a world of interesting folk there.
You can listen to the full piece on SoundCloud (link in bio).

An underwater audio and video contraption i put together. Very carefully engineered: 2 Aquarian hydrophones gaffer taped to a GoPro 😎. The idea was to get a visual on potential sound sources, with fish being my ultimate goal.
I got a macro lens magnification adapter to focus on what’s right in front of the microphones. Visibility is poor in freshwater and invertebrates are small.
It looks cool but the results were mixed to poor. A net and a transparent container would a) be cheaper and b) more efficient for IDing, at least for invertebrates.
I’d love to hear suggestions or other ideas you’ve come up with to identify the weird and wonderful sounds of the underwater realm.
1 - Front view of GoPro with Aquarian Audio hydrophones stuck to sides.
2 - Back view of GoPro with Aquarian Audio hydrophones stuck to sides.
3 - Gopro footage with hydrophones in view as they dip underwater. The footage once underwater is sped up 10x to highlight invertebrates movement.

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible.
