As the band describe it, their sound is ‘A Jubilation of the Departed. Virtues ethereal like stars reflected across all four seas’, and I will agree. It is a work of colossal form and philosophical intimacy.

Cassettes will be available from @underthedarksoil’s Spring batch of tapes imminently, in a limited run of vintage silver cassette tape.

A fresh blackened post-metal outfit hailing from the vibrant underground scene of Beijing. The six thematic spiral, plaintive tracks traverse through the elaborate sonic spaces, forging evocative melodicism wrought with the spirit of eastern philosophy.

This is a very cold, dense, murky, melodically and rhythmically dynamic, truly innovative take on post-Black Metal, arriving with a refreshing blend of familiar and unique flavors of Black Metal that I'm excited to talk about.

远人之歌 | Sounds of Alienation is a newly founded Post-Metal band hailing from Beijing. While infusing elements of many other genres, their music, plaintive yet pensive, remains firmly rooted in Chinese aesthetics—in “our World” of yore and the present. In their debut album, 天问 | Tianwen, motifs and queries over which our forefathers once obsessed centuries ago, were retold within a soundscape both romantic and philosophical—like a traditional painting scroll, emotions sublime and heartwrenching were intuitively wielded into these six songs, where a blissful aching gradually blurred into the faded rims of mountains and rivers, of a vermillion and cyan so dampened and thinned. Eventually, like a downpour of stormlike radiance, erupting into one of the most enthralling closures we’ve seen in years.

“Wood—that which rises forth. Sprung from the earth, whether to bend down or stand straight, it understands its grain.

The world exalts the Wood that proves “Useful”: fit to be carved into sinew and bone, fit to shoulder the beams of empire.

Yet far more numerous is the Wood deemed Unfit. Scorched by mountain fires, crusted with rime, it endures precisely because it is of No Use. The so-called rotten trunk outlives dynasties—witnessing rivers renamed, borders redrawn, the realm of men sworn eternal.

One laments the martyrs without shelter—yet it‘s but the uncarvable fate of any Unfit Wood. Alone in this body, hands wrung in futile resolve, heads bowed down, day after day.

Generations of Fathers and Sons and their Ossified Fates—do weep not: when it’s your turn to become ashes and dusts, I shall gather what remains.

Ten thousand leaves descend, yet none may be retrieved—should have known: only Nothingness awaits your brush of Fate, the final stroke of its grain.”
