It's Chelsea week and gardens are everywhere!

For those of us who love visiting historic homes, the gardens can often be just as fascinating as the building itself!

Their design can complement or contrast with the building's architecture, adding extra layers of meaning and enjoyment.

And just like old buildings, historic gardens can offer us clues about how tastes, fashions and philosophies have changed over time.

We've been enjoying the historic gardens at @MuseumoftheHome this week while running our Repair of Old Buildings course there.

Day out to @yourallypally with @spab1877 to study the ‘arrested decay’ approach they’ve used to conserve the theatre. We got to visit behind the scenes - above the plaster ceiling and below the stage - as well as see traditional repointing with lime mortar in action.

It’s been a great week with SPAB on their Repair of Old Buildings Course. It’s a very thorough one-week course that has included lectures on stonework, brickwork, lime mortar, metalwork, stained glass in the context of conservation, as well as how to deal with damp in historic properties, and of course site visits. As always on this kind of highly specialised course, it’s not just what you learn but also the people you meet.

Getting up close and personal to both the Cosmati pavement and the ceilings of Westminster Abbey has been an absolute dream come true.

Words cannot express the awe this impressive building inspires!

@spab1877 Fellowship Week 8: London & Essex

Westminster was the central point of discussion this week. Both Fellows & Scholars were hosted by Vanessa Simeoni and had the pleasure of viewing and discussing the works over the years of the beautiful 13th Century Cosmati Pavement.
We were so grateful to be given the opportunity to tour the Abbey, grounds & the roof. What a spectacle from the roof as the State Opening was taking place. Amazing tour from Ian & Ptolemy.

Midweek a few fellows had the pleasure of attending the Plaisterers Hall as part of the London Crafts week. Like kids at Christmas basically, some great meet & greets and new friends made. Always a pleasure to bump into Michael & Kathy O’ Reilly.

Later in the week we went to the amazing 13th century Cressing Temple Barns with Joe Bispham. Discussed the logistics of re-roofing the Knights Templar Barn and generally discussed everything Joe has to know about Timber. A cup of Slosh & a sarnie later, we headed to the site of a listed farmhouse with a Brewery on the site of a Large Incinerator owned be Indaver. Really interesting site, some amazing plasterwork found too.

Big thanks to all our hosts this week.
Vanessa Simeoni, Sasha Mitchell, Ian Bartlett, Ptolemy Dean, SPAB Education Commitee, Joe Bispham.

Next up: London, SPAB repair Course…..
We go again!

@spab1877 Fellowship Week 8: London & Essex

✨REPAIR SERIES - HISTORIC DOORS✨

Original doors carry craftsmanship, proportions, and patina that can’t truly be replicated. Their wear, detailing, and materials tell the story of a building’s age and use over time.

• Retain original timber, glazing, and ironmongery wherever possible
• Repair using traditional methods and spliced sections rather than full replacement
• Upgrade discreetly with draught-proofing, improved security, and sensitive fire or thermal improvements where required
• Avoid over-restoration, as signs of age and use are part of the building’s character

Why it matters:
A historic door is often the first point of contact with a building. Its scale, detailing, and materiality establish the character of the place before you even step inside. Once replaced, that authenticity and craftsmanship are very difficult to recover.

Late post alert* Newcastle, Durham, Bowes railway and many more was part of week 6 of the @spab1877 fellowship. Thanks to everybody involved in showing us this amazing, innovative and industrial part of the country, you know who you are! To touch the Tyne bridge and marvelling at the Romanesque style carved columns at Durham cathedral (some of which had a circumference of 7 off metres!) was just breathtaking and a reminder of how amazing this opportunity is for us all. @hols.arch @emilytheengineer @imp_mason @ins_tara_gram_ @friend_of_lime @suzymalie

What a week!

We started last week in the Highlands with David Narro, visiting some fascinating conservation projects with highly considered engineering inputs. It was such a treat to hear the stories from a lifetime in engineering.

Then we ended the week back home in Edinburgh, I always feel so lucky to live in this city. Thank you to Nic Boyes for teaching us about the monuments at Greyfriars Kirkyard - it was great to learn about the view from my office window!

Also amazing to meet all of the interesting folks at the SPAB Scotland drinks!

✨REPAIR SERIES - MASONRY✨
Masonry is the fabric that defines durability, craftsmanship, and character within historic buildings.

• Repair rather than replace
• Use compatible materials (lime mortar over cement)
• Allow the building to breathe
• Address issues at the source (moisture, movement)
• Retain as much historic fabric as possible
• Modern structural interventions should be minimal, reversible where possible, and carefully integrated into the existing building fabric
• New structural repairs must work with the building’s behaviour, not against it

Why it matters:
Inappropriate repairs and overly rigid modern interventions can accelerate decay, trap moisture, and alter the performance of historic masonry. Thoughtful conservation and sensitive structural repair help preserve both the longevity and authenticity of the building. An excellent example can be seen in these before and after images to repair works carried out to a tower in north County Dublin. Photographs acquired from @aoifecm

The Bowes Railway Museum provides an amazing look into the industrial past of the Northeast. Such an honour to be shown around by Steve whose passion and knowledge of the site was fascinating! 🚂

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
