A fortress of knowledge, captured in concrete
Robarts Library, Toronto’s monumental 1973 Brutalist landmark, reshaped how knowledge is held with bold geometry, fortress-like massing and a futuristic presence. After many hours studying and refining its complex forms, the model took form and i had alot of fun making this one. A small tribute to a Canadian Brutalist giant. Have you visited? Any memories of this building?

It’s one of Canadas most distinctive Brutalist structures being monumental, sculptural, and unapologetically futuristic.

Demoulding Boston City Hall
Location: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Architect: Kallmann McKinnell & Knowles
Completed: 1968
Status: Civic government building, still in use
Monumental and uncompromising, its raw concrete and jutting forms rise above the plaza like a civic fortress. Since its opening in 1968, it has divided opinion, earned praise and criticism in equal measure, and stood firm as a symbol of bold public architecture.

Demoulding Pirelli Building (now Hotel Marcel)
Location: New Haven, USA
Architect: Marcel Breuer
Completed: 1970
Status: State Register for Historic Places
Its dramatic raised base, created by removing two floors from the midsection, gives it a gravity-defying presence which makes it a defining piece of American Brutalism. Vacant for years, it has since been beautifully restored and repurposed as Hotel Marcel, preserving its iconic silhouette.

Rising 29 storeys with no windows, its sheer concrete walls and fortress-like profile have made it one of the most enigmatic towers in Manhattan.

Demoulding Anniesland Court concrete model
I love this iconic Glasgow building for its clarity. It is all rhythm and stance: long horizontal window bands, a lifted podium, then that separate tower holding everything steady. Capturing it as a model meant chasing the proportions between the main slab and the service tower, and keeping the bridge connections legible at a smaller scale.
A small cast of a Glasgow tower that still anchors the west end skyline.
#brutalism #brutalist #glasgow
Built on Crow Road in the late 1968, this 22-storey Brutalist residential landmark was designed by Jack Holmes & Partners. Its the only tower block in Glasgow to have Category A listed status, and it is recorded as the tallest listed building in Scotland. The banded elevations and the confident service tower have often been compared to Ernő Goldfinger’s later London towers, which makes it a satisfying piece of Glasgow Brutalism to hold in miniature.

One of the most important 20th-century buildings in Scotland
St Peter’s Seminary compelted in 1966 was a modern training college for Catholic priests in Scotland. Left to ruin, it has become a site of pilgrimage for architecture lovers a ghost structure that continues to inspire.
Im returning to Scotland this month to bring an iconic Glasgow Brutalist model to the collection.

Studio 6 Gallery presents an encore concrete workshop experience and curated case exhibition led by architect and sculptor Robyn Squires [RYSQ] of Sqrypt Atelier, featuring work by Caos Mote, Dos Santos Collective, & Space Play. Supported by @mtnshop_ny + @rivingtonhardware on the Lower East Side.
Completed in 1967, Andrew Melville Hall was James Stirling's first commission as a solo practitioner and his only finished project in Scotland. The hall's design comprises two angled wings connected by a central glazed block. With pre-cast concrete panels and sharp slab-wings, the building's unique texture and geometry create a sense of life and formality. Ive aimed to translate Stirlings work into a hand-cast concrete model which you can hold in hands.
