Pioneering sculptor, painter, and video artist Doris Chase helped shape the visual language of the Pacific Northwest. A member of the Northwest School, her public works include “Changing Form” at Seattle’s Kerry Park and “Moon Gates” at Seattle Center.

After moving to New York in 1972 and living at the Chelsea Hotel, Chase expanded into experimental film, cementing her place as one of the region’s most innovative artists.

Tragedy, Ecstasy & So On: Art, Albums and Ephemera by Jeff Kleinsmith

Join us tomorrow (SATURDAY) for the opening reception of a career-spanning survey of work by one of the Pacific Northwest’s most influential designers.

The exhibition features posters, album covers, apparel, stickers, and rare ephemera spanning Kleinsmith’s decades-long career shaping the visual language of independent music.

Best known for his more than 30 years as art director for SUB POP Records, Jeff has created iconic artwork for artists including Beach House, Father John Misty, Sleater-Kinney, The Shins, and a gazillion more.

He is also the co-founder of Patent Pending Design and New Rage Records, and a former art director of Seattle’s legendary ROCKET magazine. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Kleinsmith also teaches advanced design at Seattle’s School of Visual Concepts and has been recognized by ID Magazine as one of the 40 most influential designers.

The evening will include a visual art exhibition alongside live entertainment celebrating the deep connection between music and design that has defined Kleinsmith’s work for more than three decades.

If you spent any time in Ballard, you knew or recognized Joel. A regular at the record shops, jacket littered with punk pins and patches, he often posted up at Bop Street Records where he first fell into punk rock.

Andhi caught him at the Ballard Farmers Market, happily scarfing through doughnut holes, each bite punctuated with a sharp squawk of pure joy.

A familiar and kind presence, Joel was affectionately known as the “Mayor of Ballard.
