After 8 long years, hard years and wild years, Coma Cinema has returned for keeps.This moon that adorns the album cover was painted by my mother and has hung in every bedroom i’ve ever had.In these bedrooms I spent a lifetime, writing and recording, laughing and crying, trying to chase some big spirit down through the byzantine hallways of the mind.Somehow these songs found their people over the years and I was thrown out into the world to sing them.Through all this I have connected with humanity in a way I never knew possible and the energy returned to me from those who listened kept me alive.

Today you can hear this new Coma Cinema album, and embark with me if you will into a new era for this project, that is no longer the lonely, yearning of one person in a bedroom, overlooked by the blue loving moon painted by an 18 year old new mother , whose son brought her life real meaning.It is the shared art of thousands of people who yearn together for a world that forgives, and finds humor in despair and keeps going beyond death or that nagging call of the void.This is our Grand Delusion we are born in love with each other and love is just delusion coming true.

I love you, thank you for everything.Coma Cinema saved my life, let’s all see what happens now.

IT’S POETRY TO SURVIVE

I wrote this song over a period of time that was difficult and strange.It is, like “Thomas Kinkade’s Grand Delusion” a song about someone real who died and left the world behind.There are days I want to join them, where the call of the void seems to sing sweeter than the voice of a friend, and in those moments suffering can be the most debilitating.If one were to question why we are here the universe could on it’s surface offer us an answer in the suffering dancing around us by the grace of entropy, but I think there’s more to it than that.

Olivia sometimes went by the name Olivia Voltaire, and in Voltaire’s “Candide” all that pain and joy and miasma and bliss seems tocoalesce into one idea “find humor in despair”. But are we here merely to survive or is there some other way life can express itself?I do not know.

I probably failed in my mission in life. It’s up to those who come after me to succeed, if such a thing is possible.I offer to you in this song, the most heartfelt i’ve ever written, as clearly as I can, a prayer for a better world, that sees people live and not die, love and not hate, believe and not burn out, laugh and not despair.

The song tells the tragic story of Thomas Kinkade, the most financially successful painter of all time, dripping with kitsch and lower middle class, white trash opulence, his paintings adorned the walls of many a double wide trailer of my youth, and his mawkish galleries adorned the malls.I wanted to find out who was he really, and what sort of art would he have made for himself, if unburdened by success?Why he loved his first wife Nanette until he died of an overdose of valium and red wine, what really fueled the passion of his life that never found its way to his canvasses.Thomas, we all forgive you, rest easy brother.

I cut my thumb so typing is hard

The first half of my first tour since 2019, is over.When Dave, the wonderful, songwriting genius that is @tracemountains proposed to me the idea I had doubts I could still hang, and when he connected me with the talented @chriswest.mp3 I felt trepidation that comes with not wanting to let people down, but at the same time, if these people believed, maybe I could to?

Coma Cinema is a band I started when I was a kid, and along that journey i’ve found and lost friends and band members countless times, but how fitting it was to rebuild this band from some of my oldest friends in this world, people who have seen me at my lowest and lifted me up with love, and when at my best said “borrow my light too and shine bright as you can.”. Chris, Chris, and Anthony, and @forkandspoonrecords were and remain as essential to this project as anyone has ever been.In stage I felt things I hadn’t in over a decade.When you play music with those you love, it comes natural.

To our partners and families at home who held it down for us as we do this crazy shit once more, we are so thankful.Something like this is only possible if you have a loving, safe place to lay your head after.We are so happy to be home.

To Honeygaze, and their amazing and idiosyncratic songwriting, thank you for the abundance of laughs and joy.I love my friends.To Dogwood Tales, and their heartfelt harmony and guitar poetry, thank you for your energy, laughs,and humbling me at darts.Trust we will run this shit back, ya’ll were both the best.

And most of all, my thanks have no end to the people who came to these shows and showed support for independent music made by human beings.Every person who came up to me to tell their story, how we connected through my records and what it meant to them set a joy into my heart that will remain there forever.It’s unbelievable to me, that some fucked up kid from a destroyed mill town in South Carolina can make a record, and almost 20 years later still be connecting with people, singing songs on a stage with his best friends.

In a few weeks we’ll be back for more dates in the western US with the creative and brilliant @skirtsmusic and @l.enabartels
