Meet Cots! 🧚🧚🧚

Cots is the solo project of Canadian composer, singer, and guitarist Steph Yates. Blending elements of bossa nova, tropicalia, folk, jazz, and classical against a modern art backdrop, Yates has crafted a suite of subtly unconventional compositions for nylon-string guitar and voice. To enrich the arrangements of Cots songs in live performance, Yates is often accompanied by Bry Webb.

So happy to have this book in hand and to celebrate with our dear friend and co-publisher Laura Daviña in São Paulo. nina rizzi is a Brazilian writer, educator, translator and researcher—and working with her was a gift. This is her first book in English.

I selected 10 of nina’s poems and edited their English versions (from multiple translators) and in this process deepened my understanding of how vast and unsimple the terrain of translation is. I am grateful for nina’s trust, grace, and patience throughout. The ten poems appear opposite their Portuguese counterparts in black and grey across creamy pages wrapped in a gestural ink drawing that I did last week on my bedroom floor.

So happy to have this book in hand and to celebrate with our dear friend and co-publisher Laura Daviña in São Paulo. nina rizzi is a Brazilian writer, educator, translator and researcher—and working with her was a gift. This is her first book in English.

I selected 10 of nina’s poems and edited their English versions (from multiple translators) and in this process deepened my understanding of how vast and unsimple the terrain of translation is. I am grateful for nina’s trust, grace, and patience throughout. The ten poems appear opposite their Portuguese counterparts in black and grey across creamy pages wrapped in a gestural ink drawing that I did last week on my bedroom floor.

Galera! Muito feliz em finalmente anunciar esse evento! Esse é pros amigos tanto da música quanto das artes visuais:

Na segunda-feira, 20 de outubro, o Wonka Bar recebe uma noite especial de música independente e conexões entre Brasil e Canadá. O cantor e compositor Didi Fiorucci abre a noite para os músicos e artistas visuais canadenses Cots e Bry Webb, que se apresentam juntos em uma breve turnê pelo país após ação no MASP, em São Paulo (19), onde apresentam a performance e escultura sonora The Cryptids.

O projeto Cots, da compositora e guitarrista Steph Yates, propõe um cruzamento delicado entre bossa nova, tropicalismo, folk, jazz e música de câmara, resultando em canções de beleza sutil e gestos experimentais. Já Bry Webb, conhecido por seu trabalho à frente da banda The Constantines (Sub Pop Records), segue carreira solo com uma discografia autoral de folk intenso e poético, marcada pela força de sua voz e pela colaboração de Yates em percussão e vocais.

Além dos shows, o evento conta com uma conversa com os artistas sobre seu trabalho nas artes visuais, mostrando um pouco de sua trajetória e abrindo a conversa para o público. Uma segunda-feira para ouvir, respirar e mergulhar em novas paisagens sonoras.
