Jonathan Kay walks us through his emotions and desires when confronted with the sublime universe of raag music.

“You can’t build a raga room in a jazz house” - Shantanu Bhattacharyya

Jonathan, along with his brother @andrewkaymusic and their mutual friend @justingraysound , spent considerable time in Calcutta learning at the feet of Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya.

What started as a jazz musicians’ quest to find new inspiration, in a culture whose spirituality and aesthetics have influenced many western musicians before him, became an overwhelming seduction that existentially compelled him to construct “a new house” as a raga musician.

Playing raag music is not just about knowing the notes, the structure or any of the mental stuff but a fully embodied, emotional and spiritual experience.

This is soundtracked to his own wistful, ras bhari rendition of raag jaijaiwanti on the Esraj (a bowed string instrument with frets - a cross between sitar and sarangi). Jon took up the Esraj in India to better understand the music and reconstruct his musical self. His Esraj guru is Abir Singh Khangura.

We spoke for almost eight hours recently and it was hard to pick a single thread because it was such a rich and meaningful interview.
The first proper introduction of our deep dive into the careers of the Kay brothers

Are kids being taught music in the wrong way?

Gary Lawrence Murphy thinks so and he has the experience to back it up. A father to a couple of formidable jazz musicians ( @thelatenolanm @m.lin.k ), he shares some wonderful perspective as a parent and lifelong music educator
———
Music by Gary’s band @eighthstreetorchestra
Featured trumpet solo by Kae Murphy @m.lin.k

Concept/Edit by Daniyal Yousaf @shararatdan
———

It was a privilege to have this candid conversation with Gary, outside a historic recording studio in Kensington after Eighth Street Orchestra had finished recording a live New Orleans style jazz album on analogue tapes! Gary’s son and ESO band leader Nolan Murphy had graciously opened the doors to a live audience so this conversation with Gary was just a continuation of the free flowing good vibes. It’s hard to make a case for quitting smoking if it leads to insightful exchanges like this, that’s just ethnographic rules.

Eighth Street Orchestra is a long running family project for Gary, and he told me he was the band leader when his kids were, well, kids. Now all grown up, Gary said he’s glad Nolan has realized ESO is the jazziest jazz band around and taken up the mantle.

——-

Thanks to @tejnoir for the company, the footage of Kae’s solo and helping out with color correction

What a great experience in this ongoing journey to discover the music scene and artists of Toronto, Canada - follow @panah.refuge for more of those.
——-

ESO line up as per website
Kae Murphy – trumpet & clarinet
Patrick Smith – tenor sax & piano @patricksmithsax
Nolan Murphy – trombone & vocals
Gary Murphy – banjo & guitar
Matt Coldwell – bass
Patricio Llovet – drums @patollovet

@shauntraffi moves between roles as a DJ, curator, and host—but a lot of the work happens in the in-between moments.

After the beautiful night winds down and everything gets packed away, he reflects on what it means to build something like this—

@tapestry_jam 3rd anniversary took place at @allan_gardens and featured:
@majdsukarmusic
@valeriabravoreyes
@mateo.mancuso
@robbcappelletto
With special guest @michaelsarian

The second teaser from our upcoming in-depth look at a truly multifaceted artist operating in Toronto’s world music scene. Bar owner, events curator, DJ, sound tech, and multi-instrumentalist—Shaunt’s work is rooted in a deep love of music, his Armenian heritage, and the spaces he creates through sound.

Filmed/edited by @tejnoir
With shots by @nikhileshbadhwar
Special Thanks to @shararatdan

Dirty Archives

I landed in Toronto in 2021 — right before the second wave.

The city felt suspended. Streets were open, but something inside them had stalled. People moved like shadows, careful, distant. It wasn’t cruelty — it was exhaustion. Survival mode.

I arrived alone.

College existed only through a screen. No hallways. No after-class conversations. No accidental friendships. Just a small room and a city I didn’t yet belong to.

As an immigrant, I felt both invisible and exposed. In the strangers I photographed, I saw fragments of myself — displaced figures drifting through an unfamiliar landscape. Everyone seemed to be carrying something unspoken.

These street images became my internal landscape.

“Dirty” is not about grime. It’s about distortion. Memory that won’t sit still. Emotions that blur the frame. I wasn’t just documenting Toronto — I was documenting my own fragmentation.

Creating from that space was uncomfortable. But necessary.

Over time, I began to notice something else: quiet beauty. Light cutting through concrete. A glance. A gesture. Small rebellions against the heaviness of being human.

Dirty Archives is not just about darkness.
It’s about learning to see light without denying the weight of where you stand.

There is a certain romanticism in longing. Ahmed Faraz’s words, and Mehdi Hasan Khan sahab’s renditions evoke a feeling of pride in being sad.

In adhooray pyaar kee kahanion mein humein kya milta hai? Kya ye kahaanian humari apni tou nahi? Shayad…

Maybe it’s just the longing for home, as an immigrant. Or the constant negotiation between jo pehlay tha, aur ko aaj kee sachai hai…kya pata…

Shukriya @sikandermusic for paying attention to the spelling mistakes. And thank you for showing grace in doing so 🙂

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
