What a night! Shivendra Singh Dungarpur announced the Silver Bear Award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution presenting it to filmmakers @fitch.anna Anna Fitch and Banker White @bankerwhite for "creating a magical cinematic universe” in the documentary film “Yo (Love is a Rebellious Bird), reading his citation that stated:

Anna spends a decade obsessively building a detailed 1/3-scale version of her friend’s house after losing her. It’s just big enough for Anna to squeeze through the door, and Inside lives a puppet of her friend Yo. When the pair first met, Yo was 73 and Anna 24. It was a love at first sight friendship that defied age, time and death.

Filmed over the course of ten years and blending documentary with puppet animation, Yo, Love is a Rebellious Bird tells an unconventional story of friendship.

The film follows director Anna Fitch’s relationship with Yolanda Shea, a woman 49 years older than her whose life stretched from Geneva to California and defied every social expectation placed upon her. Through archive photographs, intimate everyday moments, and handmade puppet sequences, the film builds a deeply personal and poetic portrait.

Rejecting traditional roles and the idea of belonging to anyone, Yolanda Shea emerges as a fiercely independent figure. In doing so, the film becomes a meditation on memory, friendship, and freedom.

Winner of the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlin International Film Festival.
