The end of our LA trip is the culmination of one of the largest and most exciting projects to date.

The project entailed the restoration and commissioning of Les Paul’s Ampex 300/350 8T-1” tape recorder (also known as “The Octopus”), his Ampex 300/351 3T-0.5” tape recorder, the infamous Les Paul Rein Narma console (known as “The Monster”), all the power supplies, monoblock amplifiers, and the vari-speed amplifier.

None of this would have been possible without the help and support of:

@rektagon
@c.omplena
@betoresende

A special shoutout to Norm from @audioanonymous1 and @chrissycaskey for putting up with all the FedEx packages we sent in advance and during the trip, and for making us feel like part of the LA audio family.

Thank you to @brycegonzales for organizing the legendary audio tech meetup, it was amazing to meet all the folks we have built long distance relationships with over the years.

Thank you to everyone who followed along!

Three, practically empty, parted-out Ampex 351 chassis were sent back north with me by Mr. Thump with the plan of breathing new life into these.

Instead of scrapping the metal, we decided to build three 351 Mic Preamps with in-house designed PCBs. Hand wired and laced on a custom wiring jig by yours truly.

The new record boards added independent Mic and Line transformer inputs, mic input 30dB pad, Altec 1567A EQ with bypass, and a Direct Input with pre/post first stage switching. Everything is relay controlled to keep signal paths short, and thus free from noise and complex wiring. The preamp stage is identical otherwise to the original 351.

The new power supply boards feature regulated (and adjustable) 12V heater and relay supply, and modern capacitor footprints. We kept the tube rectifier for the high voltage supply and the traditional unregulated dropper/filter stages.

Other features include a meter range switch (+4,+8,+12, OFF), and output attenuator so you can really get crunchy.

All this alongside new Cosmo Japanese pots, CineMag output iron, and OG ampex input mic and line iron.

With THD+N of 0.1% or better @1kHz @+4dBu out (meter OFF), and 80dB of gain, these turned out great.

All three of these units are spoken for, and will be heading back to Brooklyn soon. If you are interested in a build, reach out to Thump and we maybe able to hook you up with a one-of-a-kind creation.

🔥📢AMPEX 351 PCBs NOW FOR SALE📢🔥

The much anticipated time has come, and M² in conjunction with @thumprecording are now offering AMPEX 351 replacement board sets!

These are meant to be drop-in replacements for use in 351 preamps. Despite the new layout and footprints, the circuits and values remain the same as the OG design.

Aimed towards those with existing electronics knowledge, this is not really a kit, but more of a tool to aid in 351 repairs/restos or building a 351 mic preamp. Yours truly created a 17 page doc that contains everything you should need to use the boards. Schematics, notes, BOMs, etc.

Richard and I have poured a lot of time and effort into this project. We have used them in many OG units and custom builds with great success, and we hope that you find them as useful as we do!

You can purchase them through the link in my bio 🤠

Playing through a pair of vintage Altec speakers is very 😎 and we’ve now got a recording to prove it.

To all our HV peoples we hope to see you this Friday, April 3rd @theavalonlounge 🧪

Been insanely lucky to call the @thumprecording B room my home for 7 months now. I called Richard at the end of August to book a 2 week block of sessions and I never left. Mixing & creating in this space is the most natural it’s ever felt. It’s much more than that tho. Rich, Ben, Tyler, Justin & Maurizio welcomed me and my musical family with open arms. Excited for the future of this space, community and all the music created here

It is so good to be back at it.

@thumprecording, with the always-awesome @abeseiferth (and, from a distance, a cat with a very intense stare that kinda freaked us out tbh).

Judge Roundup for the Byrd Tapes Recording Contest, Vol. 1!

Our 5 esteemed judges come from all different backgrounds, and we were so stoked to have them be a part of our inaugural contest!

Gena Johnson is an amazing producer and mix engineer!
Paul Moak is an incredible guitarist, producer, and engineer!
Dillon Smith is the hardest working vinyl record store owner I’ve ever met and also runs an archival record label!
Angie Boylan is a spectacular drummer, absolutely ripping on band recordings and on tour!
Richard Levengood is one of the best audio techs in the world!

Together, they helped select the best 3 submissions from all our contestants from all over the world. We couldn’t be more excited that they lent their ears over the course of a month and let us know what really stood out.

We reveal our 3rd Place Bronze Prize Winner TOMORROW!!

This week we had the pleasure of recording some of my solo music in Brooklyn at @thumprecording with @wolfrobinson!

There’s too much gear to list. The vibe and the experience was immaculate.

If you’re looking for an amazing studio in NYC that feels like home, and an oasis at the same time, look no further.

We will be back soon, for sure. Love this place. Thanks to Richard and Ben and Tyler and Wolf for being great to us! @synth_history was in the house during our visit too, we hope to meet next time! 🤘🏽

Beyond stoked to announce our second judge for the Byrd Tapes Recording Contest, Vol 1:

Richard Levengood!

After multiple years of watching Richard’s hard work through Instagram, I finally got to meet him this past winter at his incredible studio, @thumprecording, in Brooklyn.

Richard owns Thump where he and his small team are maintaining and restoring some of the best studio gear available, including original Ampex equipment at The Les Paul Recording Studio in LA and a plethora of the best gear within Thump’s walls. He’s an awesome person whose work and spirit have been a big inspiration for this contest!

Richard knows analog and knows it well, and he loves recording! We are humbled to have him join our contest judges to select the winners!

📌 16 spots remain in the contest, and the opportunity to sign up closes on May 10th!

👉🏽 More judges announced soon as well as prizes and more info on contestants!

For now we’ve decided to NOT hire interns but WILL hire assistants.

We’d like provide our clients with a short list of assistants who can help with setup / tear down and everything else session related. The intent is for this to be a paid position from the start. Details can be discussed on a case by case basis but first!

If you’d like to be considered for this short list @rektagon and I will be working on the studio itself the week of Feb 10th and would like to have folks pass through and work with us. Help us to better understand you as a person, what your audio interests are and where your current studio chops are at.

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
