Beneath the Surface captures the spirit and impact of the From Roots to Arts program—featuring moments of community engagement, artist-led workshops, and the transformation of NYCHA spaces through collaborative art. The video reflects the power of storytelling, cultural expression, and what becomes possible when residents and artists co-create with intention and care.
During the month of March, Mayor Mamdani (@nycmayor), Deputy Mayor Bozorg (@dmleilabozorg) and NYC Public Design Commission @nycpublicdesign opened the doors of City Hall to NYCHA residents to celebrate the culmination of From Roots to Arts, the first artist residency program in public housing. Together, we witnessed what becomes possible when community is given the space, resources, and trust to create.

What started as a question—what becomes possible when communities are given the space and resources to create—became a catalyst for change. Across five boroughs, artists and residents came together to honor cultural heritage, share knowledge across generations, and shape public art rooted in lived experience.
This was one of the most challenging journeys of my life, but it affirmed something I’ll carry forever: my impact, like that of so many artists, extends far beyond my personal practice.
No matter where I go or what I create, I will always surround myself with community, with truth, and with the kind of work that reminds us we’ve always had everything we needed within us.

For Read Across America day, I visited one of my long time besties @theletterr.k at her work place to read to her students! These babies were all but quiet lol. However, Stick and Stone was their JAMMMMMM and you can’t stop me from singing my own.😂😂
Please read to children and buy them BOOKS as gifts! Put the kindles and iPads down and get a library card.
