I’m grateful to share “Live & Be Free”, my first kinetic installation, created in residency with @edenforestcollective. Eden is practicing regenerative Syntropic forestry (a system built on the opposite of entropy), organizing and accumulating life, energy, and resources through ecological succession and layered growth. “Live & Be Free” is a meditation on sensitivity, the delicate, and ecosystem balance.

I began mobile-making some years ago as a tactile exploration of non-duality in my recovery from fundamentalist belief systems. Expanding on the mobile form popularized by Alexander Calder in the 1930s, these delicate creations begin at their smallest part: one circular mirror balanced against its identical counterpart; equal weights, sizes, each balancing the other. But zooming out, these opposites are balanced with something greater — a third element, a third perspective, eye. Suddenly the ‘either/or’ becomes ‘either/and’, and the very constraints of binary thinking reveal the existence of something greater. The sequence unfolds on and on – what feels like a trap of two choices opens into infinite space. In this way, we don’t reject binary thinking, but rather use it to expand outside its own limitations. The process of construction is also its own therapeutic process. Each balance point is delicately reached. A few millimeters in any direction is enough to drastically alter the entire arrangement. Hearing four pianists in surround-sound was a magical experience.. I got chills the moment everyone came in. This evening was vulnerable.. hosting in a new space, all us pianists’ first times together, charging tickets as well.. I felt so stretched by the experience, a bit like heading into it blind, as well as inspired and proud that this idea continues to unfold in surprising new directions each time. Improvisation is a gift and I truly believe it is the very walk of faith we all lean into each day as we learn trust, flow, love…

Open House gathers for its 21st communal gathering at Archival ~~ Join us for an evening of transcendental music, guided meditation, and creative practice with Ty Rex & friends.

Open House is a collective of musicians and artists evolving through shared spiritual practice. Through improvised ceremony, our community of curated performers and listeners comes together to face the unknown, practicing our ability to listen and respond within uncertainty. Open House feels like a glorified soundbath guided by lineages across classical, jazz, world and spiritual music.

You are invited to bring your own quiet practice — writing, drawing, meditation or movement. Please bring a cushion or mat for the floor.
