Dutch National Opera and Ballet identity [3]:
Photography and moving image always played a key role in promoting theatre productions. They must sum up the story, the emotion, the promise... awaiting us just a ticket away. And while it’s no secret that Opera and Ballet theatres must work twice harder to keep their public, and manyfold more to nurture a brand new audience, the big question is “How?”.
For the Dutch @nationaleoperaballet the answer lies in a relentless quest for contemporary storytelling. Lesley Moore, the Amsterdam-based design collective, commissioned to redesign and art direct the theatre’s identity has done so brilliantly. Photography and moving image always played a key role in promoting theatre productions. They must sum up the story, the emotion, the promise... awaiting us just a ticket away. And while it’s no secret that Opera and Ballet theatres must work twice harder to keep their public, and manyfold more to nurture a brand new audience, the big question is “How?”.
For the Dutch @nationaleoperaballet the answer lies in a relentless quest for contemporary storytelling. Lesley Moore, the Amsterdam-based design collective, commissioned to redesign and art direct the theatre’s identity has done so brilliantly. Edward, the primary font, joins an interactive brand identity system that effortlessly toggles between the Opera and Ballet, or integrates both.
The theatre’s logo is stylistically drawn to echo Edward’s subtle sanserif outlines, reducing the theatre’s venue architecture to a minimalistic but instantly recognisable symbol.

As the lockdown restrictions across Europe ease, the Dutch National Opera has cautiously opened its doors and we are thrilled. The latest production “Donizetti Queens” and the voice of @marina.rebeka are one hell of a firework!
After a long collaboration with the photography masters @petrovskyramone, who set the bar beyond high, last season @nationaleoperaballet started a collaboration with @jonnoorlander who has been pushing the visuals’ envelope to new cutting-edge heights. Two typefaces from Type By collection - Edward, by Hendrik Weber and Fakt, by Thomas Thiemich - are the typographic cornerstones of all theatre’s communication ever since the @nationaleoperaballet brand identity was redesigned by the virtuoso Amsterdam-based design team Lesley Moore, in 2014.
