Ironically there is some truth behind this idea: Everyone starts somewhere and yes, sometimes that includes working for “exposure.”

In the beginning it can open doors, build a portfolio and create real connections. But once it becomes your profession, exposure isn’t a currency... your work has value.

It's interesting to look back to the early days or rather the first few years where hearing this phrase was quite normal. I think it's important to acknowledge that there is a time where it is okay or maybe even important to make this experience.

What's your take on it?

Since I started filming, I always loved shooting through, with, or around things that distort the image. For me, it's been the unexpected distortions and warps in the image that I fell in love with. In the prime time this was a plastic bottle or tin foil😂

As for so many other videographers and filmmakers it seems to be the move away from modern lenses and oversharpened images, so this definitely adds to it.

Find something, I can recommend the kitchen, stick it in front of the lens and see what it does😂

Editorial studio shoot takeaways❤️‍🔥 some of my tips no one asked for:

Have fun and make sure everyone does. Everyone is in with their own time and for potential portfolio work. Let the shoot feel like good times!

Look after the crew: wether it's offering drinks or snacks, checking in for their musical taste or setting expectations for the length of the shoot is important.

Treat the teams time as if it was your private time.

To me it's an obvious one that everyone should end up with portfolio content. People take their time to help you on your vision.

Also inform everyone about your ideas or vision - this should be an obvious. Even though sometimes ideas don't turn out quite as imagined try your best to deliver the output as close to the inspo as possible.

Making it happen in Tokyo ✨

I never had a specific goal of “shooting a short film in this city.” I have never really planned to do that.

But that’s the thing about chasing the dream, sometimes it’s not about a fixed destination.

It’s about saying yes.
About feeling alive.
About trusting the process even when you don’t fully see where it leads.

One project leads to another.
One connection opens a new door.
One small step suddenly places you on the other side of the worl

For me "chasing the dream" means building, learning, collaborating, failing, trying and staying in motion. Tokyo just happens to be one of the chapters.
