guided by voyces 🗣
braneworld is my realm and storytelling container -- a growing mythology of all the selves that make me, all the voices that have ‘guided’ me for years.
but I've realized that Braneworld is not just my realm. we all wear masks, and contain multitudes. we all have Braneworld characters.
and so I'm very excited to announce the Guided by Voyces conversation series, where other artists and I explore the space between who we are and who we present to the world – and all the art that arises from that tension.
we’re going way behind the scenes, into the minds of musicians. we'll discover new Braneworld characters, and ask them to speak freely, so that we can better appreciate the art that they have helped create.
I’m inviting other artists here to express the voices that guide them, because through the stories and characters of others, we learn more about our own, and we all become more willing to let those voices speak
and in the process, maybe we’ll become more receptive to voices that are less familiar to us, too

the lobster.
as a child, my stutter encouraged a certain level of isolation. being bullied exacerbated that sense, and i can still recall visceral memories of rejection, during which i retreated further into the depths of my hardening shell. amongst these normal humans, i felt lurid and gangling, like a lobster.
recently i wrote a song about the fragile, shy, sweet part of me that didn’t seem to belong anywhere back then. he believed being sweet was good, but that sweetness was rebuffed until he was forced to transform.
“the lobster” is about that young boy, but it is also about transformation, and thus it's about us all.

Incredibly excited to share this video by @jahzerah.films, which beautifully captures the emotional essence of Meridians: an intimate, connective and "self-finding" concert series.
Part gig, part worldbuilding ritual, Meridians transforms individual struggles into shared art and a communal mythology. And this is just the beginning.
________
The rest of the story:
I had a debilitating stutter as child, which led to me being bullied and becoming a hopeless bearer of my own last name. My music reflects the long road back to trusting my voice.
As I perform in these shows, the audience is invited to reflect on moments they, too, have struggled to embody their true voice. These reflections are collated and transformed into a collective character that will inhabit the Braneworld, a forthcoming TV show where our selves collide.
Also featured is the wonderful well-being and relationship specialist, Dr Adriana Candeias, who sets the tone. For decades, Adriana has supported transformational journeys in authentic relating, embodied mindfulness, and cultural transformation.
And this was the first Meridians I shared the stage with another musician: the talented artist, Serena Clara, who makes existential poetry pop that morphs organically to the point of feeling alive.
HUGE thank you to our host Made by Many and to our beer shepherds, Pillars Brewery 🫶

excited to share the very first episode of Guided by Voyces, a series about music and the art of becoming.
kicking things off with @callmelatasha, a musician and vocalist who's opened for stars like Kanye and Big Sean, and given how much her work reckons with voices, she was the ideal first guest
over the past couple years, Latashá and I have had many excellent conversations, each thoughtful and illuminating, but of them all, this was my favorite. We discussed everything from reparenting to healthcare, hip hop to Broadway dreams.
The through-line was the pursuit of balance amongst all the voices that make her, from her mother to Young Tash — her joyful child spirit — to Shadow — her ego’s outlet — to an ancient unnamed presence that’s been with her longer than she’s been alive.
thank you Latashá 🙏 full ep via link in bio, enjoy 🌻

a few years ago I had a dream. I don’t have a brother but in this dream I did, and he was on stage at an intimate gig playing this incredible song. I remember being so proud of him, and then I woke up and wrote down as much as I could remember
it took me a while to realize it wasn’t my brother on that stage – it was the version of me I wanted to be: fluent, at ease...
"nevermore" is a conversation between these two selves

this song is called "critic." it's about that inner critic that we’re constantly trying to get to shut the hell up because we know it’s not serving us, but, you know, easier said than done.
may you all learn to listen to a truer voice 🫶

A snippet from my song "Mind, the Body" from the Meridians creative workshop at The Bath House in Hackney Wick.
"Mind, the Body" is written from the perspective of Moon Mann, my alter ego and more fluent mask I've been trying to rid myself of for 30 years.
I realized that in my head Moon Mann had become the villain -- this mask I’m trying to destroy -- but all Moon Man did was what I needed him to: help me survive.
Thanks a lot, he says. I spend three decades helping you, doing what you asked of me, speaking when you couldn’t, and now you’re gonna throw me away. But before you do, he says, I’ve got something to say.

It was part of four hours of music, guided reflection, & creative exercises, were people were invited to explore their relationships with their voices – spoken & unspoken.
What resulted was a wellspring of reflection, spilled across pages in color and form, an interface between self & other, a bridge between worlds, and a lens into the soft tissues & hard truths that make us who we are.

Last Sunday, at The Bath House in Hackney Wick, we held the inaugural Meridians creative workshop.
Through music, guided reflection, & creative exercises, we invited people to explore their relationships with their voices – spoken & unspoken.
The focus was on incubating a renewed sense of belonging across three domains: yourself, your relationships, & the world around you.
Over four hours, we worked our way through each of them.
@womanofme guided attendees through connective exercises & questions like: What is it like to be me? Who do I need to express now & why is that important?
And: how do I want my voice to contribute to the world?
As I played, people were invited to express their answers in writing & drawing.
What resulted was a wellspring of reflection, spilled across pages in color and form – bridges between soul and room that were transformed into a new Braneworld character.
As @_lifebeyondpain_ noted, when paired with Adriana’s guidance, the music served as a potent portal – an interface between self & other, a bridge between worlds, and a lens into the soft tissues & hard truths that make us who we are.
This work feels evermore imperative. We’re immersed in an epidemic of loneliness – one obscured by constant connectivity & steeped in existential creative crisis.
But by inviting people to express more of their full selves, we introduce more authentic expression to the world.
And the more we express, genuinely, the more receptive we are to ways of being that are not familiar to us. We build a less lonely world – with less fear, less monoculture, more
compassion, & more diversity of thought.
We’ve only just begun 🌻

I’m very excited to announce our next iteration of Meridians – a four-hour creative workshop at @the.bath.house.hw on November 16.
Part community center, part folksy spa, The Bath House serves as the ideal environment for Meridians.
Guided by @womanofme and rooted in my story with a stutter, the workshop invites people to transform their relationships with their voices – spoken and unspoken.
It represents an expansion of Meridians, with a more contemplative emphasis on personal transformation – for anyone who feels misunderstood, unseen, or unable to express themselves.
Through music, guided reflection, creative exercises, and connective worldbuilding, this Meridians special edition will help you discover a renewed sense of belonging – to yourself, your relationships, and the world around you.
Importantly, we have sliding scale spots available if cost is a barrier - just let us know, no explanation needed 🌻
Tickets in bio.

this is the first time I've ever shared a video where it's apparent that I'm actively stuttering -- I'm so used to editing myself, re-recording the video, splicing in post-production... but it felt important to heed my own words and do it live.
here I share two pieces from my personal manifesto that I read every morning to connect with my voice -- and remind myself that if I want people to see and connect with me, I have to show up with my whole self, stutter included.
happy international stammering awareness day, to all who celebrate 🌻
#internationalstammeringawarenessday #stammering #stuttering #voice
Ten years ago I wrote my first piece for Vice – coverage of @scareypics performing in my friend’s living room in Boston.
“The engineer on my records, Brian Joseph, always said from the beginning,” Sean told me after the show, “‘I just think you need to play weird art spaces and go after the intimate live show thing.’”
Now, a decade later, I’m exploring a twist on the “intimate live show thing.”
_____
In Agent Amigo's (@marini21) living room, I performed next to her porcelain leopard Giorgio (seen here), as 30 gathered on poofs and throws strewn about the pink-hued space.
The first Meridians living room show was more casual than other Meridians, rooted in the observation that intimacy and security yield luminous reflection – and what’s more intimate and secure than a cozy living room, surrounded by friends?
And indeed, the written and drawn reflections we received were the most vibrant yet.
I wove together phrases – like “peace of mind,” “I think too much,” and “molecules of possibility” – with participants’ kaleidoscopic drawings of people, woodland landscapes, cats, flowers, moons, and myriad geometric shapes.
I then fed them through an algorithm and my Braneworld moodboard (an increasingly rigorous process that will get its own post soon) and the resultant character is below. The living room revelers named her Sapphire, presumably after the song of the same name, captured in video here...
