But the discovery of underground water, which helped support a tourism boom that began in the ’60s, put Sedona literally and figuratively on the map. Today, the Arizona destination surrounded by redrock beauty sits at the intersection of two roads, which make it a prime location for RV exploration.

A year ago, we released our field guide to Western Carolina.
Where? Basically, the fine city of Asheville and the mountain country all around, a place imbued with a specific and special cultural history. It’s rich territory for curious travelers, from booming contemporary food and arts scenes to all kinds of throwback lore and woodsy trails.

Hike the New Hampshire high country, and you’ll likely spot members of the Hut “Croo” in the wild–such as Callie Frankel and Samana Young, pictured here–scrambling up trails with old-fashioned packboards loaded with supplies, bound for one of Appalachian Mountain Club’s eight historic backcountry huts. In Saisie Moore’s story (see link in bio), we meet hut keepers like Leydi Walle, a recent college grad and hutmaster at Lake of the Clouds. She has “the formidable task of running a staff of 20 at the largest and most famous of the high huts,” Moore says. Lake of the Clouds has 94 bunks, which stay full almost every night of the summer, with croo members also serving hot meals to hungry hikers. Despite their busy jobs, these folks return season after season to help foster “a cheerful mountain culture,” Moore says. “Cloistered from the outside world, a culture of rules, recipes and friendly rivalries is passed between generations.” One morning at Galehead Hut, “the former hutmaster from 1959 led the breakfast skit, demonstrating how to fold a bunk blanket correctly.”
