@williammarksommer ★ Friday Feature

In my hometown, the enduring influence of mining on the land is ever-present, from initial growth and subsequent collapse to modern invention and recent developments. Growing up in the shadow of Sutter’s Mill and the legacy of the California Gold Rush, I observed how the region’s culture was profoundly shaped by mining and its aftermath. As I developed a deeper understanding of mining’s influence on my home, I became charged with addressing this complex history, the discarded people and places, while exploring these ongoing developments and the continued expansion of mining companies across the landscape.

Pics of the day from "A Road Home" by William Mark Sommer

portfolio shortlisted call 'Urbanautica Institute Awards 2025', 2025
Category: Memories and Traditions

Home, is it a place, people, or a feeling? In A Road Home along the Lincoln Highway, I sought to answer my own intrinsic questions about the concept of home. Returning to my hometown after years away, I felt disconnected, experiencing the changes that happened during my absence, from a gradual moving on of locals to the absolute gentrification of rural space. My recollections in this changed space inspired me to seek out what remained, what once was, and what has become of my home. By following the main street of my hometown, The Lincoln Highway, I found the people and places that shaped my concept of home. These reconnections imbued my soul with a new, more profound relationship to the past and helped me understand the concepts of home within people and place. Though home will never be the same as my childhood, this project drove me to find peace in this place as it is.

Thank you, Black and White magazine, for featuring my photo “The Lone Cowboy” as People’s Choice in Landscape / Nature in their newest issue. Throughout my childhood, my mom and I would always go to the bookstore, look at the magazines, and be inspired by all the different forms of photography. It’s cool to now have work featured on the newsstand.
P.s. The photo, unfortunately got mislabeled in printing, so I removed the label in the first photo.

In “Dusted,” William Mark Sommer (@williammarksommer) examines the enduring, toxic legacy of Western American mining, moving beyond glorified narratives to confront the physical and social devastation left in its wake.

Driven by a personal history rooted near Sutter’s Mill, the artist documents the scars stretching across California, Nevada, and Arizona.

“In traveling across Western America and spending time within these scarred mining lands, I found the landscape didn’t reflect the glorified narratives of history,” the artist reflects. “[Instead, it] conveyed the destruction and carelessness of the past, in doing so it has continued the exploitation of the present. “

Unveiling Edition 11: Analog Forever Magazine is pleased to present an in-depth article on the work of William Mark Sommer (@williammarksommer) in our first annual edition, scheduled to be published this September.

There’s something about standing at the edge of a massive open-pit mine that makes your stomach turn. Not because of the height, or the silence, or even the sheer size of the thing—it’s the realization that this land, sacred to some, vital to many, and lived on for generations long before any settler, CEO, or politician carved it into parcels, has been gutted without apology. William Mark Sommer turns to not the glory-soaked days of the Gold Rush or the myth-heavy textbooks of Manifest Destiny, but the broken landscapes left behind. He documents the terrain where corporations left their mark and walked away, and where people had no choice but to stay. His series “𝘋𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥” isn’t just a photography project—it’s a call to stop pretending the past is something we can keep dressing up in cowboy hats and Hollywood fantasy.

Read our exclusive feature of William Mark Sommer by pre-ordering your copy of Edition 11 for 2025 now! Link in Bio.

SPECIAL BONUS: When pre-ordering your copy of Edition 11, you will automatically receive a 25% discount when adding another edition to your shopping cart. This offer ends 08/31/2025.

Through creating across Wyoming, I looked inward to my changing feelings and understanding through the miles of highways that extended through the state. Returning on the same roads, I felt loss and relief, but doors to other directions. Connecting to nature within second passings, I felt new purpose in creation.

At the end of may, I received the opportunity to take part in a residency with @highdeserttestsites at A-Z West in Joshua Tree. It was amazing to return to Joshua Tree after many years away and experience something new, different and exciting over a weeks span. Through this time, I was able to connect with nature in new ways and explore projects I have been wanting to bring to life for years now, while coming to know the artistic practices and works of Andrea Zittel. It was an amazing experience and after developing all that 4x5 film, I’m already looking forward to getting back out to Joshua Tree.

Thank you again @highdeserttestsites for the opportunity!

At the end of April, I received the opportunity to take part in a two week artist residency with @homesteadnps. It was really amazing to take part in a unique program with the national parks that took me to different parts of Nebraska and gave me a chance to explore nature, develop new ideas, forward projects, create a workshop and meet many great people. I wanted to share some of these experiences in phone photos before I am able to fully develop all the 4x5 film I made along the way. Thank you @homesteadnps for the opportunity.

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
