It's good to wear your influences on your sleeve sometimes.

Learning bass in the 90s, it was hard not to be influenced by @warwickbassesofficial and the legendary bass players that played them. It contributed to the player that I am today, and I get as much enjoyment and inspiration from playing my '90 Thumb bass as I do my '64 P Bass with flats.

They're tools to be used and sometimes a vintage, neck through active bass is just what is needed... and sometimes it isn't!

I go to make bass content, I start finding drum grooves and playing along, adding in samples, and then the next thing I know, I've created some crazy dark hip hop bass line...

And I find it strange as I don't particularly listen to that genre of music often, and I rarely play it and so I feel it doesn't represent me as a bass player and I will invariably will scrap the idea... but one brief conversation and some encouragement from Mr @ianmartinallison has made me just lean into it and post the video.. so here we are. Maybe I'll do a punk rock one next!

For the gear nerds, I'm playing my 64 P Bass with Chrome Flatwounds that it had on when I got it, straight into the DI on my Audient and then added in some saturation with an ableton plugin.

Finally, put some @jimdunlopusa flats on my "Stingray" and I wish I had done this ages ago!!

You get all that extra full tone of the flats that fills so much sonic space in a mix but if you max out the treble on the preamp you still get a bit of that bite and articulation that I sometimes miss when using flats on other basses! Really versatile!

I was completely shocked and saddened to learn of Phil Campbell's passing yesterday. The world has lost a brilliant musician, but my thoughts are with my friends Dane, Todd and Tyla, who have lost their father.

I don't have a photo with Phil, but I do have this photo he took of me whilst tracking bass on Rocking Chair.

I was nervous as hell when I did that session for "Old Lions Still Roar" but Phil was so warm and welcoming when I arrived. There was no pressure, and he showed a genuine interest in me, my gear and let me play how i played. It was one of the highlights of my career and life to have played bass on a record for such a legend.

The one thing that will always stick with me was that he popped out to Tesco during the session and came back with a ham and pineapple pizza for me, so that I had something to eat when I got home x

He was the softest, kindest dog and my best friend. It has to be said that at times, he was an absolute idiot in the best possible, loveable way, and he also had zero concept of personal space!

I feel so proud of him to have lived such a long, fun-filled life. With all the health issues he had, his amazing spirit shone through and wouldn't let anything get in his way, right until the end.

It was an absolute honour to be your dog-dad. You were the most handsome of chaps, that would always receive comments about your good looks when we were out. I feel so lucky we were able to spend the last couple of days together, to be there with you right up until the end.

You will always be with me x

I came up with this bass line on Sunday evening. I'm finding I start off playing way too much... too many fills, too many notes, but slowly self-edit myself down to what I think sounds and feels good, musically.

This one is a serious nod towards the late, great Sam Rivers. A bass player who I took a lot of influence from when it came to writing my own bass lines early on, especially the use of broken chords. I guess this one is my own small tribute to him.

Recorded again on my @Fender 64 P Bass, straight into my @audientworld interface.
