The Earth’s energy imbalance has reached a new high in 2025.

Under a stable climate, incoming energy from the sun is about the same as the amount of outgoing energy. However, increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide trap outgoing energy. As the trapped energy accumulates, it raises temperatures on land and in the oceans.

More findings from the WMO Global #StateOfClimate 2025.

Why do we need observations?

Forecasts rely on data observed from all over the planet. Every economic decision, every infrastructure investment, every crop planting schedule, every health, water and energy management plan, and every supply-chain adjustment all depend on WMO’s global observing and forecasting backbone.

The risks of extreme weather to communities and economies increase as rising temperatures fuel more intense heatwaves, extreme rainfall and rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones. Earth observations provide the data we need to understand these risks and make better decisions to protect lives, communities and economies.

Only by observing today, can we protect tomorrow.

Find out more this #WorldMetDay on 23 March.

Extreme heat is putting agriculture under growing pressure.

🐄 Livestock start experiencing heat stress above 25°C
🐟 Marine heatwaves can cause cardiac failure in fish
🌾 Crop yields start declining above 30°C
👩‍🌾 More days of dangerous heat are are taking a toll on agriculture workers

Extreme heat also multiplies the risks of water stress, flash droughts, wildfires, pests and diseases.

Read the latest WMO- @fao report to learn more about how heat stress is impacting agriculture — and what can be done to reduce these risks.

In Malawi, early warnings do not stop at forecasts.

In a flood-prone district of southern Malawi, a farmer receives a text message through a local WhatsApp group warning of heavy rainfall expected within the next 24 hours. He helps spread the message through word of mouth to other villagers without phone. They then gather at the village assembly point to hear a briefing and discuss precautionary measures such as avoiding low-lying zones and not crossing flooded or fast-flowing waters. Some families move livestock to higher ground and secure tools and seed stores.

Malawi’s Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services provides the country’s official weather forecasts and climate information. When expected conditions could lead to hazardous situations such as heavy rains or dry spells, the department issues an official warning through its website with information on the hazard type, time of issue and level of severity. Warnings are then broadcasted through radio, TV, a mobile weather app and social media.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs plays a central coordinating role in ensuring that early warning information reaches communities and leads to action.

An early warning system works well only when communities know what to do before the hazard arrives. In Malawi, close coordination between forecasting, disaster management and local partners helps communities act on warnings in time.

Despite its idyllic appearance, photographer João Murteira says this lake in Timor-Leste hides a wild secret — crocodiles lurk beneath its calm waters, keeping people from venturing too close to its shore.

Around 70% of our planet is covered by water, but only about 3% is freshwater. Most of Earth’s freshwater is locked in glaciers and groundwater, while only a small amount is directly accessible in lakes and rivers.

Water continuously moves between the atmosphere, land and oceans through evaporation, condensation, precipitation and runoff. Changes in the water cycle can significantly affect precipitation patterns, leading to uneven distribution of water, droughts and floods.

Monitoring and assessing changes in the water cycle are crucial for the sustainable management of water resources and for helping communities prepare for water-related hazards such as floods and droughts.

Expect a below-normal 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, according to @noaa's latest outlook.

Forecasters predict a total of 8-14 named storms. Of those, 3-6 are forecast to become hurricanes, including 1-3 major hurricanes. In contrast, an average season has 14 named storms with seven hurricanes, including three major hurricanes.

Competing factors influence this forecast:
🔹El Niño is expected to develop and intensify during the hurricane season
🔹Ocean temperatures in the Atlantic are expected to be slightly warmer than normal
🔹Trade winds are likely weaker than average

While El Niño often suppress hurricane activity, how a season unfolds is still uncertain. #EarlyWarnings4All and preparedness are critical to help save lives and reduce damage.

The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from 1 June to 30 November and is carefully monitored by WMO’s Tropical Cyclone Programme. WMO is responsible for maintaining rotating lists of hurricane names for public awareness and safety.

[EN] Glaciers in Latin America are losing more ice than they gain.

Out of the 15 monitored glaciers in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, only three gained more ice between 2022 and 2025, while most continued to lose mass.

Satellite observations also show that many glaciers in the region, including the Chacaltaya Glacier near La Paz, Bolivia, have completely disappeared.

What happens when glaciers continue to shrink?

Andean glaciers are a critical water source for around 90 million people. They supply freshwater for drinking, hydropower, agriculture and industry.

The State of the Climate in Latin America and the Caribbean 2025 report is now available.

Did you ever wonder what the weather was like on the day you were born? This new app can be your time machine to revisit past weather.

Weather Replay from @copernicusecmwf enables anyone to revisit the weather anywhere on the globe, hour by hour, from January 1940 up to a few days before present.

The simulations uses ERA5 reanalysis, a cloud-ready ARCO archive system produced with roughly the same tools used for the ECMWF weather forecast.

The app allows users to select a date and location and features a selection of significant historical weather events like storms, heatwaves, and flooding. Weather Replay can also compare two events. For example, the heatwave in Scandinavia in July 2018 with the unprecedented heatwave in Fennoscandia of 2025 which was featured as a highlight in the European State of the Climate #ESOTC2025 report.

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
