Previously presented at Silence Guelph and Centre [3] Hamilton, this ensemble of some of Toronto’s fiercest experimentalists turns medieval European and Makam music inside out.

🏰⚔️🐴🛡🏹🤺

Fragmented Forms explores the possibilities of improvisation by utilizing both the microtonal aspect of Makam music and free improvisation, and how the two coalesce. From Paris to Istanbul, this musical mindwarp straddles the line between primordial and futuristic.

The repertoire draws from historical music composed years before the 12-tone equal temperament tuning system was invented in China and Europe. New arrangements of 13th century cantigas lean heavily into improvisation and bring forth the contemporaneity of makam music. The ensemble takes liberties in interpreting the intervals and modes of these compositions, and brings their own agency into each piece. Fragmented Forms creates relevance to the epoch we live in being deeply historical and wildly imaginative at the same time.

Participating musicians include Araz Salek (tar), Aysel Taghi-Zada (violin), Cory Harper-Latkovich (cello, rebec), Sara Constant (flute and contrabass flute), Yang Chen (percussion).

hi! on March 5, i fell off my bike and broke my ankle. i was not able to walk for 6 weeks. i lost or had to cancel most of my work for the 3 highest paying months of the year.

i want to share my experience during this time as it pertains to financial aid. if you’re a musician/artist freelancer, i hope you find this post a useful resource (but i hope u never actually have to use it!)

🥁 TMA Local 149
- they have a few different benefits you can apply for with a very short application. the funds are fairly limited!
- it took about 6 weeks for me to hear back but i did get more financial aid than i originally applied for!

💡AFC
- longer more detailed application but also more money is available for support. this is a fund geared towards emergency support so those who are in more dire situations are prioritized
- they do ask for screenshots of your bank account so for some, this can feel invasive
- the turn around time is very fast! the admin and my case worker were exceptionally supportive, kind, and prompt!

🇨🇦 EI
- for anyone who does not have 1 straight forward full time job, this application is a confusing shit hole
- i could not access EI as an employee (despite paying into it from working part time jobs my whole life) because my current part time job did not have me work 600 or more insurable hours in the past year
- i could not access EI as a self employed worker because you have to opt into the program and pay into it for a full year before you can access support. if you are self employed and thinking that you might need to take time off work for any reason, i would recommend looking into self employed EI immediately
- my case was one that falls through the cracks. very frustrating & time consuming experience
