Yarn/Wire
NYC piano-percussion quartet
Russell Greenberg & Dustin Donahue, percussion
Laura Barger & Julia Den Boer, piano

Big thanks to @icareifyoulisten and @drmckaypiano for such a lovely artist feature in honor of our 20th anniversary! It was a joy reflecting on where we started, how we’ve grown, and what’s next, plus some amazing quotes from legends Annea Lockwood and George Lewis!
“I’ve known Yarn/Wire for over a decade, and I am, like Venus Williams at age 17 at the US Open, super-stoked about my work with this new music superquartet on my April 2026 New York Philharmonic concerto grosso. Their unmatched, insightful virtuosity and post-genre, creolized perspicacity continues to inspire as we try to present new experiences and ways of being and doing.” George Lewis

clip of Yarn/Wire for Currents 2025 from the Roulette Archive.

Being at the @moersfestival felt like stepping into an amazingly joyful world built entirely around curiosity, openness, and musical experiments✨
We began on the main stage with @pleasureofthetext ‘s After Nan Shepherd: stark, dark, spacious music that felt really thrilling to share in that setting. It was also wonderful to collaborate with the luminous@taraling for the first time on this project!
Then came Currents 12, featuring pieces by Jonah Haven and @bergrun_______ . The resonance in the church was extraordinary, and this program is both beautiful and weird in the best of ways… catch it at @roulette_intermedium in NYC THIS THURSDAY.
There was also the Pianomobil (a Moers institution) @julia_den_boer got to perform for residents at a retirement home, rolling through the park, and bring music into unexpected corners of the city.
We’re very grateful to everyone who listened, organized, helped, and shared these days with us.

Next week we unleash @bergrun_______ ‘s SUPRASEETHER at the @moersfestival, then we bring it to @roulette_intermedium on May 28th as part of Currents 12!
Get your tickets at the link in bio 🎟️
Program notes below, 🔊ON for slide 2!
SUPRASEETHER explores the interplay between performers and their environment as they are dissolved into a shared, teeming field of awareness. Feelers extended, wanting to be limbs unfurled - the quartet as organism, sensing at the edges of its conditions. The sound becomes a field of perception, a body that listens as it negotiates with itself to breach their boundaries, shaped through contact, pressure and proximity. The material slipping away as it emerges, heeding a call towards impending fission.

Still reflecting on two emotional performances of Be Holding as part of the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh last week.
It was an honor to share this project, one we’ve lived with for so many years, at such a legendary festival at the @carnegiemuseumofart with Brooke O’Hara directing and music direction by @dr.tyshawnsorey_official
This iteration featured Ross Gay reading his own work alongside with amazing @davegpoetry . We’ve heard this text a hundred times, and it still feels moving, new, and deep each time…
Many thanks to @kes.oli for lending his talent to this project and joining us as a guest percussionist, and much gratitude to the entire staff at the Lovette YMCA, along with the fantastic group of teenagers who brought so much joyful energy to this experience!
Also to @hungrymonsters for making it all sound so good (no small feat in a gym!), to @iamitohane for shaping such a dramatic visual world, and @mdeins for the amazing video design.
We’re also immensely grateful to @solichpiano and @yasinewyork for providing two grand pianos for these performances.
Until next time! 🏀❤️🎹🥁

We spent a fantastic week in Aarhus for the @sporfestival ! What a privilege to bring back @simon_steenandersen ‘s epic Grosso and perform it with the @aarhussymfoni under the direction of @josephbastian81 !
The following day we performed a brand new piece by Mads Emil Dreyer as well as one of our longtime favorites, Orchestra for Black Butterflies by @lisastreichmusic
There was a theme through the week: each piece came with its own slightly unreliable extra band member: a Leslie speaker for Grosso, a music box for @madsemildreyer ‘s new work and motors for Lisa’s piece… all adding their unpredictable charm to the performances.
Massive thanks to the incredible production teams at the @musikhuset and the @sporfestival for making everything run smoothly, no small feat given the sheer amount of gear involved in these performances!
And finally, our sincere apologies to the @radissonbluaarhus for the heroic quantities of smoked salmon consumed at their breakfast buffet.

We are so happy to bring back Be Holding for two performances at the 59th Carnegie International in Pittsburgh next week ✨
A collaboration between director Brooke O’Harra (@brookeoharra ), composer Tyshawn Sorey (@dr.tyshawnsorey_official ), poet Ross Gay, and Yarn/Wire, Be Holding draws on Gay’s poem: a love song to legendary basketball player Julius Erving, also known as “Dr. J.” The work connects Dr. J’s famously impossible move in the 1980 NBA Finals to Black flight and joy.
Premiered in Philadelphia in 2023, Be Holding continues to evolve. This iteration features Ross Gay alongside David Gaines (@davegpoetry )as narrators, and includes a group of Pittsburgh teenagers who have been working closely with Brooke and Ross over the past months.
The work will be staged on the basketball court at the @thelmalovetteypgh
This project is very close to our hearts, we hope to see you there!
Performances:
Saturday, May 2 & Sunday, May 3
7:30 PM
Tickets available at the link in bio.
