💦 Splash into summer at @lacma, where Alexander Calder’s large-scale fountain sculpture “Three Quintains” anchors the northeast corner of the newly opened David Geffen Galleries.

The work was initially commissioned for the museum’s original William Pereira–designed campus, which opened in 1965. Calder also designed a poster commemorating the museum’s opening, causing his imprint to be baked into the DNA of the place, notes LACMA’s director and chief executive Michael Govan.

“Calder is perennial,” Alexander S. C. Rower, president of the @calderfoundation, told the @latimes. “A lot of people who arrive here not knowing anything about this artist will be excited that there isn’t a bronze here or something static. There’s activity, there’s color, there’s motion, there’s light.”

Now on view at #PaceNewYork: "The Moon Room" features 15 iPad paintings of the night sky created by David Hockney at his 17th-century half-timbered farmhouse in Normandy between April and December 2020. 🌔

Inspired by his daily observations of the landscape, the artist devoted himself to the iPad, a medium of unique immediacy that allowed him to be prolific in his depictions of his home and the changing seasons in the surrounding countryside.

“Once, when we were just sitting outside the house, we put all the lights off in the house to see the moonlight more clearly,” Hockney has said of the making of this series. “The moon could then be seen to cast shadows of the trees on the grass, so with my backlit iPad, I could draw it. This would have been virtually impossible without it.”

Now on view at #PaceNewYork: "The Moon Room" features 15 iPad paintings of the night sky created by David Hockney at his 17th-century half-timbered farmhouse in Normandy between April and December 2020. 🌔

Inspired by his daily observations of the landscape, the artist devoted himself to the iPad, a medium of unique immediacy that allowed him to be prolific in his depictions of his home and the changing seasons in the surrounding countryside.

“Once, when we were just sitting outside the house, we put all the lights off in the house to see the moonlight more clearly,” Hockney has said of the making of this series. “The moon could then be seen to cast shadows of the trees on the grass, so with my backlit iPad, I could draw it. This would have been virtually impossible without it.”

At the center of Kenjiro Okazaki’s (@kenjirookazaki) theoretical and artistic practice is the idea of time as a constraint—one that art makes visible, only to overcome it.

His upcoming exhibition in London, “Never could be any other way — anagnorisis,” takes its two-part title from both The Beatles and Aristotle. Both name the same structure: the retroactive discovery that what has happened could only have happened this way.

For the presentation—Okazaki’s first in the UK—the artist brings together sculptures, large-scale paintings, and a selection of his delicately framed Zero Thumbnail series.
