Join us for an evening with Maggie O’Farrell, author of the multi award-winning book and film Hamnet, as we celebrate the release of her latest novel, Land.

Inspired by the mapping of Ireland in the mid nineteenth century, Land is at once intimate and epic: a story of buried treasure, overlapping lives, and persistent ghosts, and is a portrait of a family navigating a legacy of upheaval and survival with resilience and love.

Maggie O’Farrell is the author of nine previous novels, including After You’d Gone, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, The Hand that First Held Mine, The Marriage Portrait and her memoir I Am, I Am, I Am.

Her novel Hamnet won Waterstones Book of the Year, and the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2020.The film of the book – with a screenplay co-written by O’Farrell and director Chloe Zhao - has already won numerous awards at film festivals worldwide, and as well as winning the 2026 Golden Globe for best motion picture, is also tipped to win at the Oscars in March.

Sink or Swim: A powerhouse duo offered parallel perspectives on how to deal with the devastating impact of “what’s coming for our planet at frightening speed.”

Principal research fellow and author, Susannah Fisher rallied behind a more optimistic view stating, “every fraction of a degree counts” when it comes to targeted action. The key lies within small scale action using current technological solutions rather than striving for an unrealistic global multi-lateral solution.

Chaired by James Long, former diplomat and author, Arthur Snell encouraged our audience to remember that despite the despair-provoking reports on our current climate situation, it’s vital to hold onto glimpses of hope.

The pair suggested that the way to appeal to the geo-political psychology across generations is to reinforce the inter-dependent chain of reaction on a day-to-day level to understand how change across the planet can reach our very doorsteps.

An informative evening drawing from their latest books, in the atmospheric council chamber on how one can implement positive action in this climate.

The chandeliers were twinkling and the fans were a-fluttering as we settled in for a delicious session at the Banqueting Room at the Guildhall in praise of the glorious Jane Austen.

Our trio of Janeites, author Jessica Bull and comedians Rachel Parris and Cariad Lloyd drew us in to the world of Austen. They gave us the chance to indulge ourselves in thinking about which Austen adaptation is our favourite and which of her heroes is most romantic and lovable.

Rachel and Cariad are both founding members of improv drama group Austentatious and Jessica Bull has studied Austen’s life in depth during research for her series which features the Regency novelist as an amateur sleuth.

Rachel’s new novel, Introducing Mrs Collins, takes Charlotte Lucas, a minor character from Pride and Prejudice, and follows her life after she marries the odious Mr Collins. You’ll have to read the book to find out whether Charlotte finds love.

Who’s your most lovable Austen hero?

An expert delivering an engaging and well-researched talk into a subject can inspire us to go and find out more for ourselves. And so it was with art historian Judith Mackrell, talking about her biography of siblings Augustus and Gwen John.

Her illustrated book, Artists, Siblings, Visionaries has just been shortlisted the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction Prize and her talk about the lives of the brother and sister who grew up in a modest home in Tenby and went on to become successful artists.

“Gus was the Mick Jagger of his age, bohemian and beautiful,” she said, while his sister lived on the rural outskirts of Paris and converted to Catholicism. “When Augustus died he was feted as a giant of an artist, but over the years their fortunes have been reversed and Gwen is now more famous than her brother.”

“You are the music whilst the music lasts”

BBC radio presenters, Tom Service and Elizabeth Alker lent their expert ears on how sound itself shapes our culture, history, art and ultimately our lives.

Commissioned by Radio 3, music journalist Tom, curated his book to undertake the incredulous feat of defining our history through a careful selection of fifty pieces.

Chaired by Guest Curator and BBC producer, Joe Haddow, our audience soaked up the passion pouring from the radio duo, championing the “limitless world of connection” found in music streaming that comes from the soul and simply cannot be replicated by AI.

_UNCLASSIFIED_ series presenter, Elizabeth Alker shared her discovery of sound within a musical family and how instrumental it was in transforming the world around her.

From the church bells of Lincoln to the ‘happy birthday’ melody, we journeyed all the way back to the bone instruments of our ancestors. A brilliant evening exploring the intersection between words and song.

What better sounding board to ready us for the upcoming Bath International Music Festival, starting 30 May - June 7!

Head to @bathboxoffice to discover ALL our events at the festival.

It is tough to be in the room when someone tells you an uncomfortable truth. There’s no switching off or turning away when Horatio Clare, author of We Came By Sea, shares some of the painful reality of those who try to come to Britain in overloaded, flimsy dinghies. They come in desperate search of what they believe will be freedom to live a better life.

The journalist, who spent months researching and interviewing migrants and those who try to help them, said: “The British press may be the best in the world, but we have failed on this story.”

“It is your money, British taxpayers’ money that is supporting those terrible, terrible camps in Calais, and the agencies here.”

In a hard-hitting conversation with former BBC journalist James Long, Clare said his solution to the small boats crisis - “because they will keep coming” - would be to take the money paid to private agencies which house asylum seekers and give it instead to local authorities towards equal housing opportunities for all.

Gorbachev was famously a Russian president Margaret Thatcher could do business with. President Putin, however, remains an enigma.

Journalist Stefan Stern deftly chaired a conversation with Andrew Monaghan, author of Blitzkrieg and the Russian Art of War and strategy expert Septimus Knox. It was fascinating to hear these three share some of their knowledge about Russia’s place on the world stage, and its intentions.

Septimus spoke about what happened to Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. “All the rich Russians adopted citizenship of different nations and if you go to UAE in the restaurants you’ll only hear Russian.”

There was speculation about whether Putin will withdraw troops from Ukraine. Andrew Monaghan said: “It is very sad. I think they will end the combat this year or next but they won’t give up I’m sorry to say.”

They all agreed that our politicians and the foreign office should be meeting the Russians, and ‘at least look our adversary in the eye.’

An afternoon well spent with best-selling author Natasha Pulley, guiding our aspiring authors through the magical terrain of speculative fiction.

Drawing from inspiration across a range of media from books to tv shows, our room full of writers were enticed into creating their very own magical concept or ‘novum.’

Challenged into breathing life and weaving magic into their concept, master of her craft, Natasha led our writers into an exploration of their own worlds through a series of creative exercises.

An afternoon between the inspiring stacks of Bath Library wrapped up with Natasha signing copies of her latest fantastical release, The Mars House. Leaving Bath Festivals inspired and ready to write their very own tales of glory.

Head to @bathboxoffice to discover ALL our events at the festival.

Who knew the Sunday newspapers could throw up so many gags? In the hands of comedians Marcus Brigstocke, Jayde Adams and Priya Hall the headlines raised laugh after laugh.

This was improv at its best. The story in the Sunday Express that ‘our beloved Red Arrows may have to fly in foreign planes’, prompting Marcus to quip, “I don’t know who’s going to tell them that their fuel comes from the Middle East.”

The trio on stage riffed through all kinds of topics, from whether Andy Burnham is really working class to why shooting owls at Balmoral is bad manners. We considered the best places to get self-help – “Tik Tok is where I get mine, “Priya told us, “I was this close to going to live on a cruise ship” and Jayde gently teased the Bath audience about being posh.

The session closed with a discussion on whether England goalkeeper Gordon Banks was poisoned by the American State and Marcus giving us his brilliant impression of Donald Trump snatching men’s football World Cup trophy and claimed it as his own.

A fantastic insight into the drama that can unfold living life upon England’s waterways. The UK’s first Canal Laureate, Jo Bell gave us an extraordinary record of this lifestyle, sharing with us the threats many face when pursuing these unique ecosystems.

Chaired by co-director of Lyra Poetry Festival, Lucy English, our audience offered a fantastic rally of support in advocating the importance of maintaining these waterways, agreeing the need for government support in the face of climate change and ever-changing legislation.

Author and Poet, Jo stated that ‘A boat only has meaning when it floats’. Before treating us to a dramatic reading of her memoir, leaving us ready to dive into Boater with both feet!
