Dan Kidner
Curator and writer / Head of Department Fine Art, Kingston School of Art.

We are looking forward to the opening of “Demolition/Escape” at Fluentum, on April 28, 2026. Bringing together three artists whose work with video and sound shares a concern with movement, risk and inversion, the exhibition features Tina Keane’s “Escalator” (1988), fully restored and exhibited for the first time in over thirty years, alongside newly commissioned works by Hilary Lloyd and James Richards.
In “Escalator”, reversal and replay estrange familiar gestures from habitual meaning and lend everyday movement new symbolic weight. Inversion operates here, and in the practices of Lloyd and Richards in different ways, as a critical method. Read more on our website (link in bio).
April 29 – July 25, 2026
Opening: Tuesday, April 28, 6–10 pm
Curated by Dan Kidner and Raoul Klooker

Restoring “Escalator” (1988) by Tina Keane, which stands at the centre of the exhibition, has been a labour of love. It was last seen in “Signs of the Times”, a touring exhibition curated by @chrrrissie for @modernartoxford in 1990–94. The tapes were digitised by @adhawkdd at Media Preservation Lab Dundee and @rewindartistsvideo, coordinated by @luxmovingimage, and the structure was rebuilt using notes and images from the archives of Keane and @modernartoxford. Many thanks to both for the support, especially @amy_bvdd and @paul_hobson_ at MAO, and @ali___roche and #charlotteprocter at Lux.
Sitting in conversation with “Escalator” are new commissions by #JamesRichards and #HilaryLloyd. Thanks to them both for coming on this journey with me, and to their galleries, @sadiecoleshq , @isabellabortolozzi, @galerie_neu and @sylvia_kouvali for all their support.
Lastly, thank you to @fluentumcollection for the invitation and to @raoulklooker for being a wonderful co-curator, and to the whole Fluentum team: @nikkkamikkka , @spatzlova, #jorgadam and #moritz.

A bit late posting this, but I wrote a piece for @art_monthly_uk on last year’s Deep Time Festival at the @fruitmarketgallery curated by the brilliant @elainemitchener1
It's in the February edition. You can also hear me going on about it on Talk Show with @chriskbmccormack, the podcast produced by Art Monthly. Find it on the AM website or wherever you get you podcasts (it’s on Spotify). It also features @_e_d_b_ talking about Being... @theotherjohnsmith and @ben.burbridge talking about rave culture.
And if my review inspires you, get tickets for the next iteration of Mitchener’s Moving Eastman - a piece I write about - @barbicancentre 3 and 4 April.
