Q3
@alyssadavisgallery
Curated by
@problemchild.advisory

Diego Gabaldon, Kyle Gallahger, Nina Hartmann, Leif Jones, Gyae Kim, Danka Latorre, Jack Lawler, Sean David Morgan, In June Park, Cameron Spratley

In economic terms, Q3 typically refers to the third quarter of the fiscal or financial year, spanning July, August, and September. It’s a checkpoint — not quite the end, but a moment to assess, reflect, and prepare for what’s to come. It’s a time for reporting, re-evaluating, and re-strategizing — a pause before the finale.

Q3 evokes bureaucracy, professionalism, and optimization, but in its shadow lies a looming sense of anxiety and unease. The gates are closing. The body is still, but there is still life under the overpass.

Offering a surreal cocktail of brawls, shots, shadows, pixies, pixels, girls, gremlins, yogis, business deals, actors, horses, hooligans and a puppy. Q3 serves up a crude account of the current state of affairs and conjures up a frightening premonition of what could spur if business continues to carry on as usual.

There’s something sinister in the air.
The bass pulses low. The clock ticks.
A dissonant chord is expected to resolve.

Like a beat that’s just too fast in a song that’s just too loud — agitating and disorienting — the visuals worm their way through the psyche. The works reflect our screen-addled, overstimulated moment. Symbols flicker like road signs in a dark tunnel. There’s a forgotten mysticism here — a ritual quality to art that’s resurfacing from the underground.

David Henry Nobody Jr.(@davidhenrynobodyjr )
Deep Fried Objects (DFO),1994
Fritter batter Recipe from The Joy of Cooking, Fake Flowers, Butterflies, Bras, Baby Shoes, Wood, Steel, Glass(Deli Door), Light Fixture
83” X 36” X 23”

Quotes from David’s @tyler.nesler interview In @interlocutor.magazine :

“Someone would invite me to do a group show at a cafe or a bar. I would do the most hardcore piece I could possibly think of. I was so hungry to make art and flash. The drive was very strong. I couldn’t really try taking my slides around galleries, and I got rejected all over the place, and I was very impatient. I’m not going to wait for some rich person to sweep me off my feet. So, I started making art wherever I could. I got the [fried objects] idea from walking around the city.”

“You can see there’s stuff like garbage pickup stickers on it and shit. In Max Fish, it was quite a hit. I heard that Kiki Smith saw it. There were a lot of druggies in there, like heroin addicts and stuff, and it was back there on the pool table, and I do remember that I kept going in and seeing if the piece was doing okay. I was worried about it there, and it was unplugged, and I realized it was because it was too bright. I put the dimmer switch so it could be turned down to a nice, sleazy glow, and then it was on all the time. It was probably a vibe killer back there [without the dimmers]. Loungey heroin. I was never into heroin, but there was sort of a 90s lounge sleaze kind of vibe to it…subversive.”

Bill Rabinovitch (@rabinart )
Soho Couple,1986
acrylic on Linen
48 × 96 in

Soho Couple painted a year before Rabinovitch’s iconic work on permanent display in the Canal st post office (slide 2) marks a period of extreme artistic energy and production.

In the words of Walter Robinson:
“I think probably the first profile I wrote for the just-born #ArtnetMagazine way back in 1996 was on #BillRabinovitch (b 1936), a longtime SoHo painter who did his own thing and ran his own show, and the hell with the aristos and gentrifiers with their stupid Minimalism and Conceptual art. He made big, trippy, Picassoid mythologically inflected scenes, fraught with serpent symbols and double-faced houris, striped and spotted and often enough coated with shiny epoxy. He sometimes could be found on Saturdays with a big painting he’d carried to the sidewalk in front of the 420 West Broadway building, where #LeoCastelli and #MaryBoone would give him a thumbs up on their way into their temples of high art. Bill was also a Portopack pioneer, and has documented untold SoHo events over the past 50 years.”
