What happens to a body that only knows the sound of waiting? What does it mean to haunt a silence?

STAGED is a short film by vAL featuring Roderick George and Corey Scott-Gilbert in an endless loop of false starts where two nihilistic characters rally through self-reflection to interrogate their roles inside of a theatrical conundrum. In this virtual commission from Baryshnikov Arts, STAGED employs the theater itself as a reflective pool, mirroring life’s absurdities in search of a glint of horizon. Accompanied by the voice of Gus Solomons, Jr., STAGED unpacks a world of exuberant exile where rules are meant to be broken and caricatures confronted.

Perhaps hope is only elsewhere; perhaps elsewhere is already here…

On Sunday during @berlinartweek, Corey Scott Gilbert | vAL unveiled their newly commissioned work Bellied at the Neue Nationalgalerie as part of PERFORM! 2025.

✨ Moving through empty bleachers with shards of mirrors, the performer confronted the audience’s gaze—closing the distance until boundaries dissolved. The piece leaves us asking: How do we reposition ourselves for better reflections? What can be assembled from splintered thoughts?

Thank you to everyone who experienced this performance with us and became part of its intensity.

Am Sonntag während der Berlin Art Week präsentierte Corey Scott Gilbert | vAL im Rahmen von PERFORM! 2025 an der Neuen Nationalgalerie das neu beauftragte Werk Bellied.

✨ Mit Spiegel­scherben bewegte sich der Performer durch leere Tribünen, stellte sich den Blicken des Publikums – bis die Distanz schwand und Grenzen sich auflösten. Das Werk hinterlässt Fragen: Wie können wir uns neu positionieren, um klarere Spiegelungen zu finden? Was lässt sich aus zersplitterten Gedanken zusammensetzen?

Ein großer Dank an alle, die diese Performance mit uns erlebt und ihre Intensität mitgetragen haben.

Besonderer Dank gilt Turkana für Musik und Sounddesign, Dasniya Sommer für die Dramaturgie, SADAK für das Kostüm sowie der American Academy in Berlin @americanacademyinberlin, die dies möglich gemacht hat.

At our annual festival PERFORM! 2025, @CoreyScottGilbert | vAL presents the new commission “Bellied”. Come around, the entry is free!

Moving through empty bleachers with fragments of mirrors, vAL unsettles and reflects the audience’s gaze, coming closer and closer until performer and spectators share the same space. Bellied gathers what is left after shattered reflections to sketch new possibilities—asking how we can reposition ourselves for better reflections, and what might emerge from splintered thoughts.

Corey Scott Gilbert (*1983), an American artist based in Berlin, creates curated situations that highlight the absurdities of hopeless social dynamics. With an inherently queer perspective and off-grid aesthetic, their practice turns personal histories of movement into a multidisciplinary playground where joy is not sought but devoured.

Im Rahmen unseres jährlichen Festivals PERFORM! 2025 zeigt @CoreyScottGilbert | vAL die Neuproduktion “Bellied”. Kommt vorbei, bei freiem Eintritt!

Mit Spiegelstücken bewegt sich vAL durch leere Ränge, fängt die Blicke des Publikums ein und nähert sich Schritt für Schritt, bis Performer*in und Zuschauer*innen denselben Raum teilen. Bellied sammelt Fragmente zerbrochener Spiegelungen, um neue Möglichkeiten zu entwerfen – und fragt, wie wir uns neu positionieren können, um bessere Reflexionen zu schaffen und was sich aus zersplitterten Gedanken zusammensetzen lässt.

Corey Scott Gilbert (1983), US-amerikanischer Künstler mit Lebensmittelpunkt in Berlin, beleuchtet mit einer queeren Perspektive und einer „off-grid“-Ästhetik die Absurditäten einer hoffnungslosen sozialen Dynamik. Persönliche Bewegungsgeschichten dienen als Ausgangspunkt für multidisziplinäre Spielfelder, in denen Freude nicht gesucht, sondern verschlungen wird.
