The mixed Asian discourse has touched a nerve, and now everybody has their hot take; including plenty of people whohave no idea what they’re talking about. A lot of this started as justifiable backlash to the whole wasian meetup fiasco, but at this point the conversation has overcorrected into a toxic melee of flattened narratives, accusations, defensiveness and prejudice all too familiar to people who grew up in mixed families. The most absurd thing is, this entire thing is founded on a fiction. There is no such thing as a Wasian, or a Blasian; even “Asian” is a made-up category. Touch grass is all well and good but we also need to ask ourselves: who is benefiting from these ideas and constructions? This whole wasian discourse is out of control. I understand the desire for an identity and a safe cultural home, but these wasian meetups and the construction of a new caste among Asian Americans and mixed Asian people is doing far more harm than good. We need a reality check, and a reminder that wasian influencers do not speak for all mixed Asians, or even for all mixed folk of Asian and European background. Context matters, and it is heartbreaking for those of us who don’t fit the “wasian” mold to be excluded and erased from the conversation about identity AGAIN.
