Join us July 8th/9th to celebrate the release of Play Time’s debut album Magic Object on @balmat.cat in Kingston and NYC! We’ll be playing in the round at the beautiful new @tempokingston upstate on July 8 and at @publicrecordsnyc in Brooklyn on July 9. New-In: Though up on the wall here in the shop for a few weeks now, we’ve been laboring over this post because of our long relationship and admiration for Ben Vida. With yesterday’s @balmat.cat announcement there is another record/release/project coming shortly, had to get this one up in the feed.

We’ve been Ben Vida fans and enthusiasts since the 1990s. And throughout his career Ben has remained one of the few artists to successfully engage wide varieties of different musical voices with great success and execution.Before attending the Bard “summer in the cool countryside” art mill for his MFA, Vida studied in musical conservatory contexts, so more than just an intro to critical theory he also has serious chops.

And speaking of voices, Vida’s latest, _Oblivion Seekers_, offers another iteration in his linguistic turn, which began in full during this last decade or so, though we can isolate his play with language as far back as the very early ‘aughts, both with Bird Show and, at least indirectly, with Pillow.And lest not forget, Ben played guitar in the oft overlooked post-U.S. Maple band Singer, where almost everyone in the band, well, sang, and sometimes together. So they were playing with language and words too.

The one-sheet for this record may need to be addressed elsewhere, as not entirely sure about the primacy of speech in the way its’s framed there, but take their #RobertAshley point, though it seems like non-language is very much vital to language and critical theory’s approach to mouth and mind and species these days as well.

The one-sheet opens with “To be an attentive listener to the world as it stands is to be saturated with language. Speech resounds through nearly every space that features human beings, whether unwanted or desired, mundane or profound.” And this new Lp offers a beautiful case in point.

The title track, Oblivion Seekers, from my new record on @shelter_press has been taking shape for a little while now. First performed in Woodstock with vocalist @amygernux, @rewirefestival with @yarnwire and @ninardante and @inagrm with @felicia_atkinson, the version on the LP includes Nina and @henry__fraser. Looking forward to seeing what new iterations/combinations might be possible in the future : )

The Lea Bertucci, Cleek Schrey, Ben Vida, and Henry Fraser Quartet (an ensemble with local roots) will open the show. This is going to be a truly special and visceral evening of performances.
