Since 2019, the festival has highlighted a particular emerging European photographic scene as part of its focus. For this 16th edition, the invitation is given to Ireland with the presentation of series by four artists from this territory.

«Some of these processes are very slow. It was the opposite of taking a digital photograph». Ruby Wallis explains the way she built her series with asylum seekers, based on their histories and using special photography technics.

🗓️ The exhibitions are open Wednesday to Sunday from 2 pm to 7 pm, through May 17

"Fuil Fréamh & Lus Mór / Bloodroot & Foxglove was developed during my project at Lismore Castle Arts in 2025. The work was made through conversations and walks with International Protection Applicants, using plants as metaphors for belonging, healing, and connection. Many of the images were taken during a night walk with the group through Lismore Gardens, using disposable 35mm cameras.

Delighted to have my project reviewed in @sourcephotographyreview’s latest edition, HOSTILE — an issue reflecting on the immigrant experience.

The work featured in my portfolio review is from Between Dog and Wolf @lismorecastlearts, curated by @paulmcaree for A Space for Lismore 2025. This project was developed in collaboration with a group of brilliant people seeking asylum in Ireland and in a hotel adjacent to the castle walls.

Together, we walked through the gardens at night. They spoke about plants they recognised from home — their names, their uses, their memories.

Photographs were made on disposable cameras during these walks, and later workshops explored lumen prints and phytographs, working with plants and alternative processes. In the studio, I created a series of anthotypes using plants that surfaced in our conversations.

It was great to be paired with the writer Nora Labo, who framed this project with sensitive, incisive insight.

The nettle anthotype now appears on the front cover of this issue, alongside powerful work by @conorhorgan and @davidjshawphoto

Huge thanks to @rachel_macarre, @paulmcaree, @miriamoconnor, and @coconut_mule @mike_smalle__ @captainpompom2042 @sourcephotographyreview for the support and dialogue around this work and gratitude to @artscouncilireland and @tomflanaganstudio
