After years of turning emotion into melody, @matthewifield is decidedly less interested in writing songs people can simply throw on in the background. Instead, he’s far more invested in creating music that asks something deeper of its listener. “The world has too many simple love songs,” he says plainly. “It should be focused more on very specific concepts and ideas.”
Fresh off performing at The Great Escape during his first “proper” trip to the UK and about to embark on his Close To Your Heart Tour, Ifield speaks with the quiet thoughtfulness of someone becoming increasingly aware of what he wants his art to do emotionally as much as sonically. The shift is especially evident in his newest release ‘Thinking’, an intimate release that trades polished simplicity for emotional precision. “The night before releasing, I remember being pretty nervous,” he admits. “What the song was about was pretty difficult to listen to casually.”

After wrapping a particularly grueling (but fab!) fashion week schedule, I was convinced that nothing much else about a runway could surprise me…
Boy, was I wrong.
Enter: Doré. The fashion-turned theatre production spectacular from Sydney designer Paris Jade Burrows. Designed to transport its audience through the nine concentric layers of hell and back, it sounds almost painful to describe a show in this way. And at some points it was, as strong themes and acts sent ripples of unease through the crowd. Doré was far more than a downward spiral through limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery: it was a tour through the darkest parts of the human psyche shrouded in gothic beauty. @parisjadeburrows

@first.nations.fashion.design On the eve of Australian Fashion Week 2026, members of Australia’s fashion community from all backgrounds gathered at Artspace to witness the excellence of First Nations fashion design at RECLAMATION. From a side-of-runway vantage point, the power and presence in the room was undeniable. Beyond being a triumphant display of craftsmanship and creativity, the show marked a historic continuation of the ancient Songlines that are sacred to the core of Aboriginal storytelling.
Marking a historic return (homecoming!?) to Sydney after a four year hiatus, First Nations Fashion and Design (FNFD) is an independent First Nations-lead platform created by mob for community with a mission to dismantle and rebuild the status quo to better celebrate and showcase Indigenous excellence. In the words of FNFD founder Grace Lillian Lee (the first Indigenous Australian to present a collection during Paris Couture Fashion Week!), the notion of reclamation is not simply about visibility within existing systems. “It is about dismantling those systems and rebuilding them on our terms. Our culture is not a trend, a reference point, or a resource. It is sovereign.”

The Scourge Of Allegory: Genesis Owusu Finds Home In Reality @genesisowusu
For years, Genesis Owusu has been building worlds to help make sense of this one.
Black dogs. Roaches. Characters that could carry the weight of real life without ever naming it directly. Allegory gave him distance from reality, a way to make it more surreal and, in some ways, more manageable.
But for his new album, REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE, that distance is gone.
Sitting down with the Ghanaian-Australian artist, the sincerity is palpable. “I honestly felt like in this time and space, I didn’t have the privilege to be ambiguous anymore”, he explains. “It felt like there was a wave washing over the world. Hatred, greed, far-right ideology becoming cool again. Washing over like a plague. A worldwide scourge. The album is about the here and now, the trials and tribulations and the chaos and the paranoia, but also about community, and regaining our ability to see the humanity in one another.”

Cool Stars Shine Brighter: The Public Becoming Of Cat & Calmell @catandcalmell
Cat & Calmell’s journey towards their most authentic selves is anything but a straight line.
There’s no clean befores or afters, no magical moment where everything locks into place. The story of besties and collaborators Catherine Stratton and Calmell Teagle unfolds in real time, through the music, instinct, and vision… a process that feels somewhat public and not quite resolved.
Their latest mixtape Live Laugh Cool Star captures that transformation in action. Leaning into play, persona and pop spectacle, the project also marks a subtle but significant shift in how the duo understand themselves and their art. “We really believe that the mixtape was, like, a mini manifestation,” says Calmell.

Between Instinct and Intention: FUKHED and Nerve on Timing, Trust and Sound @fukhed @nerve.mp3
At a first glance, FUKHED and Nerve might seem like unlikely collaborators.
One came up through DJing, building a reputation across club spaces before stepping into the studio, translating a deep knowledge of UKG, garage and bass-driven sounds into her own productions. The other moves between rap and production, known for his sharp, instinct-driven approach to beatmaking and a catalogue that leans into raw, high-energy hip hop.
Totally different entry points, different genres, different scenes and yet, somewhere along the way, their paths began to overlap. What makes this collab work isn’t obvious at first. It’s not just shared taste, or even shared history (considering both artists got their start in Brisbane). Instead, it’s something quieter that’s taken time to evolve.
