Homesickness, 2024 for @publicartabudhabi 🦪
I wanted to make a choir of singing pearls for the Corniche (the place where I first discovered public art), and one that reflected the luminous building materials of downtown Abu Dhabi. Each oyster is milled from aluminium and contains a speaker embedded in a pearl; each pearl emits separate tracks of a spatial composition. The main three-note theme is taken from the song “Tob, Tob Ya Bahar”, originally sung by the wives of pearl divers praying for their safe return.
It was a dream to work on this with @helloacrush - and sorry for the windy audio….added a little Logic clip at the end for more musical context.
Public art and new mediums are both scary things but I had so much support. Shoutout to the @publicartabudhabi team, esp Luz and Nikolai, Reem, the ACRUSH team, @jgutierrezhadid for helping a Logic girl with Ableton, @andrew_js whose feedback helped shape the music, the contractors, builders and engineers, and Manu, who is the festival attendant for my work.
The location pin is on the PAAD website and is very close to an incredible drum piece by @lawrenceabuhamdan, ahlan wa sahlan

Time of Misfortune, 2026

A young girl screams so loudly, she brings a curse to her bloodline. Told through a child’s diary, the film features my own nursery schoolbooks (lovingly scanned by my mother), footage shot in Ras Al Khaimah, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and in my studio, and drawing contributions from many young artists.

I always love writing music for film, but this round was extra special as I got to work with Joe Namy’s wonderful sound design, which enriched every part of the process.
Truly, truly grateful that I get to make weird things with other people.

Greater New York is now open @momaps1

Showing new work from Dearborn, Texas, and the Gulf on the third floor. Major gratitude to Ruba Katrib, the curatorial team (Andrea, Jody, @cornelia.butler, @elenamariakg, @sacredboi, @krittenbach), to Lilly and the production team and art handlers for putting up an incredible survey that I’m so honored to be included in.

Very thankful for the additional production help from @tomweinrich, @loupedigital, @supremedigitalny, @francoisghebaly and @ndza and grateful to the people in these photographs (Marrim, Amaney, Fatima) for their trust 🙏🏽

Some of Ruba’s test from the catalogue:
“In this series, Motor City merges with Arab life. This unrepresented population (Arabs are not on the US census), are carefully captured by Al Qasimi. For her works shown in Greater New York, Al Qasimi has continued her work in Dearborn, while also shooting in various locations across Texas, Kuwait, and the UAE. Connections between these disparate places—through geopolitical histories and economic interdependence, through labor, migration, oil, and the specter violence, all of which lingers behind the surface in Al Qasimi’s work. The images stitch together a cohesive sense of life and self-fashioning that unfolds across time and place, despite the geopolitical contexts outside of theframe.”

For today’s issue of Éditions Selects, a special Valentines Day edit from artist and photographer Farah Al Qasimi:

‘I’ve put together some love-themed offerings from a few of my favorite books (think of it as a box of assorted chocolates)

I want to believe that love will drag us out of this colossal mess that we’re in — love for others, love for ourselves, love for humanity

As we indulge in the symbolism of beauty and excess that surrounds this holiday, may we also strive for lives that alchemize love into compassion and hopelessness into action and rigor

A suggested action for anyone in the US right now: Read about the work of Haven Watch [havenwatch.org] and donate to their cause’

In order of appearance:

Farah Al Qasimi ‘Hello Future’ @capriciouspublishing
@joel_meyerowitz ‘Wild Flowers’
@nangoldinstudio ‘The Ballad of Sexual Dependency’
Maia Ruth Lee ‘Baggage Bondage’
Paul Outerbridge Jr. ‘Photographs’
Imogen Cunningham ‘Mother’s Days’
Miss Piggy ‘Miss Piggy’s Guide to Life’

We are pleased to announce photographer and musician Farah Al Qasimi’s upcoming exhibition “Psychic Repair,” opening Friday, Jan. 30 at the SCAD Museum of Art!

Through highly saturated photographs and music videos, Al Qasimi explores the unseen forces that lurk in the media and shape the way we behave and view the world.

Al Qasimi’s solo exhibition will feature in-gallery works along with large-scale installations in the Jewel Box vitrines along the façade of #SCADMOA.

“Psychic Repair” is organized by SCAD Museum of Art associate curator Brittany Richmond and presented as part of SCAD #deFINEART 2026.

Desert Hyacinth is open @sanatorium_ 🙂‍↕️ named for my favorite salt water plant that erupts occasionally on the coast of my beloved Ras Al Khaimah ⛺️

Thank you @ulyas for your thoughtful curation - I love this booklet in which there is a fab & generous essay by @epikse and a Turkish-translated dance of a poem that @kamelya.omayma wrote in response to my work 2 years ago 💫

Instagram
