“I think what was so empowering for me about these ideas was that you don’t have to think-think like that. You can completely let go of any societal expectation to speak fluently and just use your voice as it is. And I ju-just wanted to be: ‘Look at this. Really, you don’t have to feel the deep shame you feel about stammering.’”

What do you hope for people who stammer?
“But I do hope, we can have a bit more than just learning it’s okay t-t-to stammer and really step into what it can fully bring to our i-i-identity, what it means to thrive with stammering.”

What does it mean for stuttering to be relational?
“The literature and the visual culture, etc. that really excites me is the kind of work where we look at stammering as deeply relational, that it only happens between people, between us, across our bodies in conversation with each other. It’s deeply relational, profoundly so.”

What is powerful about the social model of disability?
“I think the social model what’s so powerful, or what was then, and still is for me, ehh, powerful, is it it offers an alternative understanding of, of disability not as a, um, biological problem situated within the individual but, um, as a kind of social and and political matter that is very much situated in society.”
