5 Lens Attributes Every DP Needs to Know. From blade count to bokeh, discover what separates standard glass from a storytelling tool.

Here’s what to look for:
1. Speed: Consistent T-stops across your entire set are non-negotiable. Shane looks for T1.3, T1.4, and T1.8. Once a lens hits T2.4 or higher it falls off his list. Inconsistent stops slow down your gaffer and cost you time on set.

2. Flaring: A flare is a fingerprint. Shane actively seeks lenses with color variation, rainbow characteristics, and unique behaviors that no color suite can fully replicate in post.

3. Metadata: In LED volume and VFX-heavy productions, smart lens tracking data saves budgets. Accelerometers, gyroscopes, real time focus and T-stop data. Shane learned the hard way on a feature what it costs when that data isn’t there. He won’t skip it again.

4. Optical Fall-Off: A lens delivering 150 lines of resolution corner to corner looks technically flawless and feels emotionally flat. Natural edge fall-off pulls the eye inward toward the subject and does the compositional work for you.

5. Blades and Bokeh:Cooke glass has 7 blades. On a digital sensor, beautiful out-of-focus lights become stop signs. The more blades, the more circular the bokeh, even when you stop down.
