Right now, there are a few tow teams out in the biggest, meanest Mavs we’ve seen in a long time. @andrew_cotty just got towed into this monster wave by none other than @jeffclarkmavericks. Pretty much guaranteed every surfer has said this to themselves or to someone else at some point !
This wave came right after one of the heavier beatings of the session. I was rattled, tired, hurt, and close to heading in.
Then this was my ‘just one more’ which turned into three or four after 🤣🌊🇮🇪

Every month as a kid it was the same mission, track down the new surf mag, read the stories, look at the pictures, and just dream. Australian Surfing Life, Surfer magazine, Surfing, Tracksmag… but the monthly staple was always @carvemag . Growing up in the UK, it was our mag. Just getting a thumbnail shot in there felt like making it. That happened a couple of times and I was absolutely buzzing. So to still be getting double page spreads in Carve all these years later, I’m still just as stoked. Mag is still going, still supporting British surfing. And I’m still that same kid walking into the newsagent, finding it on the shelf, and buying it. Can’t beat that feeling. 🤙

Il y a bien sûr Mullaghmore, l’incroyable gauche aux houles gigantesques qui n’est pas loin de détrôner la célèbre Nazaré. Mais à ce titan des mers correspond une voisine tout aussi puissante et tubulaire située elle aussi, en Irlande, ce rivage devenu incontournable dans la galaxie du surf de gros. Le photographe @bastienbonnarme est parti avec les surfeurs @jerome_sahyoun et Benjamin Sanchis à l’assaut des deux monstres. Des images qui se suffiraient presque à elles-mêmes.

Chez Bastien Bonnarme, l’exceptionnel s’use à force d’être fréquenté. « Il n’y a rien de particulièrement dingue à raconter de ce voyage irlandais. Il ne s’est pas passé grand-chose en dehors d’une grosse session de surf. » Habitué aux journées XXL souvent shootées en aqua, le photographe landais (qui n’a plus rien à prouver dans le surf de gros) arrive ici à banaliser l'exceptionnel. Car ce qui s’est passé le 18 décembre dernier en Irlande n’a rien de bien normal.

Did you see Cortes Bank in season 3 of 100 Foot Wave (HBO)?

The cold is a teacher.

It gives you the chance to create safety in a stressful environment, regulate your state, and build the ability to stay calm under pressure. It can break mental patterns, reset the mind, and leave you feeling energised, clear, and driven long after you get out.

This particular cold immersion was 5 minutes — here’s how we approached it:
1. Respiratory rate reset – Counter the gasp reflex with 3 long exhales.
2. 4:6 breathing x 6 – Inhale 4, exhale 6 for 1 minute.
3. 3 physiological sighs – Inhale, top-up inhale, then long sigh out.
4. 5:5:7:3 x 2 mins – Inhale 5, hold 5, exhale 7, hold 3.
5. 3 hums – Long humming exhales to finish.

“I know it’s a buzzword at the minute and everyone’s into it, but for me it came from big waves. The first thing when I start getting into big waves is, I need to hold my breath for as long as possible. Through trying to do that I learned I could control anxiety, help sleep, be healthier, recover better in between waves. If you understand how you breathe, the better you understand your breath, the better you can do in a lot of things. Not just sport – day to day.“
