THIS Gallery is proud to present Dark Wreath, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Vancouver-based artist Babe Siegl.

Siegl’s practice thrives at the intersection of painting and animation. In Dark Wreath, he merges the uncanny realism of digitally rendered objects and environments with the lush materiality of oil on canvas. His works are at once dreamlike and stark, glittering with artificial reflections, playful avatars, and symbols charged with erotic and gendered meaning.

Through cycles of digital dissection and painterly exploration, Siegl probes the complexities of contemporary queer identity shaped by the Digital Revolution. Mirrors, coils, and duplication become metaphors for the recursive patterns of harm that queer people must navigate on the path toward self-acceptance—grappling with toxic masculinity, shame, and the trappings of the gender binary.

Yet the exhibition is not without optimism. Siegl’s colourful, exaggerated figures—part toys, part avatars—embody the plasticity of youth and the potential for transformation. In their hybridity, they suggest a queer futurity that can embrace contradiction, rupture, and renewal.

“Dry January (Four of Cups)” study on gessoed paper.

Wet, cold, poor, dark, too many resolutions, maybe alcoholism, Blue Monday, brain-dead and bored bored bored. I pulled the four of cups over and over in late December and early January, so much so I began to admire it’s timeliness as the card of stagnation and, yes, boredom. It felt good to do something about it!

Announcing a little impromptu open studio tomorrow, Saturday November 22nd from 11 am to 6 pm at the Sun Wah Centre—things didn’t line up to participate in the crawl this year like I had planned, but I am happy to get a taste with the blessing of my neighbours. I will have prints, a few framed up small works, sketches and whatever else I can muster. Come just to say hello and get a peek of some upcoming work!

Big thank you to @kellytatham for humouring me with a recent top-notch photo session in the studio ❤️ and to @monikerpress for these wonderful riso prints of my paintings.

I’ve always wanted to do a piece inspired by the ten of swords, pretty unanimously the worst tarot card, and I sort of stumbled into this composition before realizing what I was pulling from. “Point of Disgust,” the Perfume Genius cover of Low’s original song, has been in heavy rotation since the Transa album dropped at the end of last year. A closet painting if there ever was one! Thank god that’s over with.
