we started recording around 10:30 AM. recorded all live with the exception of the horns and vocals which were overdubbed.

Started mixing around 2:30 PM and printed the final mix to 1/2” (tape) around 5:00 PM. Then it went off to our brand new vinyl cutting suite. 🎉

Then, after cutting we played a test lacquer at our HIfi listening bar @bar.neiro later with some friends and food and drinks by @thenearjeffexperience @_qussy_tastes_like_bibleverses. ✨✨✨🙏🏽

Cut on a newly restored Neumann VMS 70 lathe, the mastered audio is transferred as grooves “cut” into the lacquer-coated disc. That master disc is then ready to be sent off to the pressing plant. We concluded the day dropping the needle on one of those lacquer cuts next door at Bar Neiro, Berlin’s jazz kissa-style listening bar.

Holed up for the day at @brewerystudios, part of Analogue Foundation Berlin, we witnessed magic unfold as several of Berlin’s finest musicians and soloists laid down tracks in a pure analog studio session. Under the guidance of legendary producer and champion of analog recording @russelevado, the performances were recorded directly to tape, capturing the warmth in the room and the nuance of every note.

Together with Erik Breuer and the Brewery Studios team (@rhea.sode, @1168pm, @pebo_exp) Russell took those raw tracks and began the meticulous process of mixing. This wasn’t just adjusting levels; it was sculpting the sound, bringing depth and clarity to each instrument. Mastering followed, where the final sonic polish gets applied through precise equalization, compression, and limiting, ensuring the music translates optimally to the physical limitations of the vinyl.

Finally, the delicate art of lacquer cutting, where sound becomes grooves. Cut on a newly restored Neumann VMS 70 lathe, the mastered audio is transferred as grooves “cut” into the lacquer-coated disc. That master disc is then ready to be sent off to the pressing plant. We concluded the day dropping the needle on one of those lacquer cuts next door at Bar Neiro, Berlin’s jazz kissa-style listening bar.

In an age of algorithms and digital precision, vinyl records and analog sound stand as testament to the enduring power of human touch.

Between February 11th & 12th in deep winter Berlin, Vinyl Alliance and its members @audiotechnicaemea and @official_optimal_media invited an international team of analog recording experts, alongside a hand-picked group of artists, curators and diggers, to witness a remarkable metamorphosis: the transformation of vibration into vinyl. 

Together we watched the process of a record’s creation - from studio session to factory pressing in a single continuous event, not just capturing the live performance, but breathing life into it; preserving not just notes but subtle nuance, imperfection, and the unique character of analog craft.

Featuring music performed by @frankathefairy, @pettereldh, @silvanstrauss, @abase_music, @me.ronne, @turbobiiitch, @lisa.ma.bu, @zeidlerniko and @mo_yoofee. Recorded, mixed and mastered by @russelevado & @brewerystudios at Analogue Foundation Berlin. Printed and pressed on BioVinyl at optimal media, Röbel/Müritz.

This undertaking was a collective reflection on how a vinyl record is more than music - it’s a tangible expression of the dialogue between artistry and engineering.

As we navigate a digital era, vinyl reminds us that there’s profound beauty in the organic, the handcrafted, and the imperfect; it invites us to slow down and immerse ourselves in the rich, textured experience of analog sound.

XJAZZ! and the @analoguefoundation are proud to present ‘Entangled Grounds: The Sound of XJAZZ!Berlin’, a compilation that celebrates identity, innovation and collaboration from across the city’s musical landscape. It follows a shared journey which has taken place over the last ten years which has seen XJAZZ! become a cornerstone of Berlin culture, quietly bridging the gap between musicians, listeners and producers from across the globe.
Recorded over five wintery days in 2023 at @brewerystudios , unique collaborations were made alongside individual artists to showcase the sound so often experienced each year at XJAZZ!. Featured artists included @abase_music , @mo_yoofee , @bintanzar , @serakalo_exii , @sofia_efty , @zeitgeistfreedom , @waynesnowmusic , @sonicinterventions , @pettereldh and a specially commissioned suite featuring @asongforyouberlin with string arrangements from @zachariasfalkenberg .
