Why make a film about amputee aid in Ukraine?

When I was interviewed by @therealnihal last week about my upcoming documentary Djakuju, one of the main questions I was asked was - why? Why me, why this story and why now?

Once I saw people crossing the border in 2022 firsthand, the answer was simple.

I know I have to make this film.

//

I’m @georgewebster.dop - a Manchester-based documentary filmmaker at @broadenstudio

@djakujuthefilm is our documentary about amputee aid.

This month, your donations help bring this story into public view - where it can’t be ignored.

Hello? Did you forget?

The war in Ukraine is still happening. 100,000 Ukrainians have become amputees since Putin invaded in 2022. Despite this, coverage is dwindling.

For Ukrainians, the nightmare continues. It’s up to us to keep their stories alive.

We haven’t forgotten - have you?

One grassroots music venue was lost every two weeks in the UK in 2024. More than half of grassroots music venues made no profit at all in 2025. What’s to come in 2026?

Grassroots venues are the pillars of which the UK’s iconic music scene stands upon. Without them, up-and-coming artists don’t get the chance to perform. Music-lovers can’t support their local talent. But with prices rising and funding dwindling, this crucial sector is in trouble.

Broaden backs the underdog.

Our relationship with experimental music from homegrown talent runs deep. From filming sweaty sets at @supersonic_fest in Birmingham, to contemporary classical pieces with @manchestercollective, to hosting our own audiovisual @nightgardenfestival, we are experts in this field.

On that note, behold Broaden’s latest creation: our Psychic Dancehall Hype Reel! Held across multiple venues in Derby, this festival showcased a range of alternative and underground music from top-notch artists. We worked with handheld FX6 cameras and prisms, plus we were joined by Harry and Joe, two student filmmakers from @derbyuni.

We need to keep supporting our local music venues and festivals. Without events like this, our music culture can’t survive.

We've all seen this. War fatigue, shifting news attention, dwindling aid. It all affects Ukraine.

So what can we do?

We need to keep our eyes open. Keep sharing stories. Keep profiling real people on the ground.

It should be Earth Day, every day.
On our studio door we have the words 'nature bats last'. It's a reminder to the team that:

- nature isn't an 'out there' far away
- we're all nature
- and ecological limits are very, very real

📸🌿 Stills from ten years of filmmaking across the north of England, the eastern coasts of Spain and Australia, adventures in mainland Europe and beyond.

When one trip leads to something much bigger... Meet @paul.fullick.racing from @djakujuthefilm

Paul is an army veteran, charity leader, racing driver, owner of a motorbike cafe, driver coach and since 2021, an amputee.

But he's also just a normal guy: "I thought I'd do one trip and that was it."

This week we're filming in Indonesia! It's got us reflecting on a previous work trip, when Bryony visited the Banda Islands in 2023.

These portraits are just some of the people we met there, across the week on this incredible volcanic archipelago.

The first photo is of a man called Magafira Ali. Maga is a community champion, an activist and a doer. He cares deeply about waste and the effect it has on our ecosystems, and has been instrumental in setting up a recycling scheme which works across education, infrastructure, behaviour change and collective action.

Maga left a lasting impression on us.

So it's a wonderful full circle moment that we're working on a project about improving waste in Indonesia with the @worldbankgroup and George is out there filming as we speak.

*Five lessons for complex storytelling*

Do you work in the arts, culture or charity sectors? Then you'll know how hard it is to distill complex messages into clear stories.

Here's what I've learnt:

1. KIDS SAY IT BETTER. Adults overcomplicate.

2. START WIDE. Capture the 'off camera' moments and not just the main event.

3. FIND YOUR FOCUS. Choose a key character and hone in. Follow a personal thread.

4. BREATHING SPACE. Powerful messages need room to resonate. Use music and pause points.

5. HUMAN CONNECTION, ALWAYS. If a moment makes you laugh, smile, or even cry, it will do the same for your audience: gold dust.

Try these lessons on your next impact film project. They also transform your social media campaigns, reports and newsletters too!

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
