A Multimedia Performance by Jin Jung
Wednesday, May 20th at 7:30pm

As part of the Individual Artist Fellowship program offered by the Jersey City Arts Council through the Jersey City Arts & Culture Trust Fund, this year-long project was conceived with our city and its people at the center stage.

Using a multimedia "crankie" performance, In the Morning will incorporate original illustrations and shadow puppets, photographs, and video footage sourced online and from interviewees. *A crankie is a storytelling device that creates moving pictures in real time when cranked by hand.

Inspired by Journal Square and our human desire to fly like a bird, we will make kites and windsocks that reflect something about Journal Square, drawing from its architecture, history, people, and events.

What does a portrait of a place look like? Perhaps it’s the Jackie Robinson statue you saw before walking from the train station, or it’s the giant brick building of Mana that piques your curiosity about its history. The stories we learn will inspire you to make something that carries meaning.

After a-year-long research and many interviews, I am ready to show-and-tell what I learned.

As part of the Individual Artist Fellowship program offered by the Jersey City Arts Council through the Jersey City Arts & Culture Trust Fund, this year-long project was conceived with our city and its people at the center stage.

Over the past year, I have worked with local librarians, researchers, and neighbors to learn about the lasting impact of Hurricane Sandy on our lives today. As we reflect on the days following the storm, I will weave in and out of audio recordings of residents recollecting their experiences with live music and poetic narration during the presentation. These stories include the memories of flood victims who see their experiences through the lenses of being an artist, activist, historic preservation commissioner, real estate agent, therapist, and caregiver.

This project is funded by the Jersey City Arts Council, the Jersey City Arts & Culture Trust Fund & Art House Productions, and the Javiera Rodriguez Microgrant Fund.

Jin Jung, "Something Happened Here"

"The plaques resemble historical markers, like the ones found in cities to commemorate events or important figures. They mention names and historical moments, such as uprisings, hurricanes, and local histories. Next to them is a map, and in front, a model-like structure with bold text.
Visually, the deep blue plaques stand out strongly against the leafy background image on the wall. The piece feels educational but also critical. It references place, community, and history. The phrase “ARE WE WHAT WE DRINK” suggests a connection between environment and identity perhaps referencing water, contamination, or local resources.

I think the artist is exploring how geography shapes who we are. The work may also be addressing environmental justice or the way communities are defined by both their history and their infrastructure. My interpretation is that identity is not only personal but also ecological and political. Where we live and what we consume literally becomes part of us."

"Jin Jung’s 'Something Happened Here' resonated most with me, speaking volumes upon first viewing. When approaching the piece, you are presented with a map covering all of Hudson County, with Jersey City as the main focus. On this map, you'll find stars that mark specific points with historical significance. Each star has a tile that describes the event that happened there, such as hate crimes, natural disasters, or achievements. Alongside the tiles and the map is a
3D model of a house that shows what we are depending on what you spin. The importance of this piece lies in remembering where we come from or understanding where we stand. Where we come from shapes our identities and is closely tied to who we are and what we believe."
