“When we construct the film, creating that world is all important. The great thing about Stop Frame is you can do anything, you can take it any way you like, but you have to make up your world and you have to stick quite rigidly to what that world looks like.”

Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, the latest feature from Aardman Animation, see’s the return of the gadget loving Wallace and Gromit as the eponymous duo fight familiar foes, face new threats, and learn to live in a world where technology can be wonderful, but the human touch is important too. Cinematographer Dave Alex Riddett @bscine spoke to stopmotioncinematographer.com about keeping the spirit of the original films and retaining the handcrafted artistry of stop motion while balancing traditional in camera techniques with new technology. Much like the beloved duo themselves. Our latest in-focus article takes an in depth look at the cinematography of Aardman’s latest film.

‘Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl’ sees the return of Feathers McGraw as he takes revenge on Wallace and Gromit for the events of ‘The Wrong Trousers’. He is aided in his evil plans by an army of Norbots who set to work in Wallace’s basement, building the submarine they will use to carry out their escapades. This scene was a particular favourite of cinematographer Dave Alex Riddett @davealexriddett @bscine as it gave him the opportunity to work with colour and back projection.

You can see some of the details of the lighting for this sequence in this BTS clip, see it full size with added detail on our website (stopmotioncinematographer.com) and watch the final sequence in ‘Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl’ from @aardmananimations, available now on @bbciplayer in the UK and on @netflix globally.

Stop motion is a very detailed and handcrafted process and as cinematographers we like to put the same detail into our lighting and camera work. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl was shooting for over a year, with over 40 units shooting simultaneously, and with an amazing camera and lighting crew.

This clip is a little glimpse into the work that goes on every day behind the scenes.

Wallace and Gromit camera and lighting crew:

Director of Photography: Dave Alex Riddett @bscine
Senior Lighting Camera: Charles Copping, Laura Howie.
Lighting Camera: Beth MacDonald, Sam Morris @sammorris_dop , Daniel Morgan @danielrm_dop
Camera Department Supervisor: Joe Maxwell.
Senior Camera Assistant: Naomi Bowey, Joe Egan-Martin.
Camera Assistant: Charlotte Northam, Siwan Cati Hughes, Caitlin Williams.
Junior Camera Assistant: Jade Bamsey, Roberto Dooner.
Trainee Camera Assistant: Diane Pognan.
Virtual Production Operator: Caitlin Williams.
Lead Motion Control: Linda Hamblyn.
Senior Motion Control: Willy Marshall.
Junior Motion Control: Lewis Bray.
Additional Motion Control: Adam Cook.
Supervising Gaffer: Joseph Clevely.
Gaffers: Sally Wattiaux, Alan Barr.
Senior Electrician: Toby Farrar.
Electricians: Dan Lewis, James Owens.
Junior Electrician: Arthur Crisp.
Electrical Assistant: Adam Vernon.

Thank you to all the crew, sorry if I didn’t manage to catch you with my BTS camera, and thanks to everyone in our physical production technology support team :-)

“You have to trust that not everything has to be super slick. You can smooth all the goodness out of stop-motion films. At Aardman we actually celebrate the fingerprints, they’re all part of it. The difficulty in making these films also provides the aesthetic.”

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
