Toloka is a traditional Ukrainian gathering where community comes together to support one another through shared work, food, and presence. On May 10th, we bring this spirit to Rotterdam with a daytime cultural fundraiser at @timeisthenewspace

Silent Dialogue: Early Ukrainian and Dutch animation with live music
On November 9, join us for the evening of a rare selection of early Ukrainian and Dutch animated films, reimagined through contemporary sound by @maxym_ll (@yi.collective ) and @disisnemo (@20ftradio ).
The musical duo will accompany short movies by creating atmospheric soundscapes. A cold electronic sound will amplify the constructivist visual style of the short films. The musical set combines the hypnotic drone rhythms with melodic patterns and immersive spatial effects.
This event is happening with the support of the @ukrainian_institute.

20ft Radio (@20ftradio) present the Ukrainian film ‘Hedgehog Cakes: Sweet Weapon of Terror’ directed by Zhenia Stepanenko (@ihaveablogdude), with support of Vitalii Nemchenko (@disisnemo) and Bondariev Mykhailo.
✨ The film sheds light on the dark history of totalitarian repressions during the late 1930s, focusing on a peculiar artefact: hedgehog cakes. Named after the notorious Soviet people’s commissar Nikolai Yezhov (with ‘yezh’ meaning ‘hedgehog’ in Russian), these seemingly innocent desserts became a spooky symbol of terror. According to speculative theories, hedgehog cakes were not just treats but served as secret signals of inescapable danger, marking recipients for possible exile to Siberian camps or even death.
